Oh Look, A Crystal Ball

spain_employment_office

When future Historians write about the demise of the United States, they will marvel at the vast evidence hiding in plain site that should have warned us about adopting destructive Leftist policies.

England and Canada went down the path of Socialized medicine long before we passed Obamacare and their warnings can be found here and here.  Yet we ignored them.

Today, from NPR, we have a further warning about our pending collapse if we continue to increase the role of Government and reduce the role of the Private Sector.  The story is based in Spain and points out the juxtaposition between an over employed Public Sector and a Private Sector that has an unemployment rate of 25%.

“When Spain’s economic crisis hit, the private sector immediately started shedding jobs and cutting wages. New labor reforms have made it even easier for companies to do so, and unemployment now tops 25 percent.”

“In contrast, most public employees still have jobs for life, says economist Gayle Allard of Madrid’s IE Business School.”

“They have had their wages frozen. Hiring has been frozen. But it’s not the kind of severe adjustment you’re seeing in the private sector,” Allard says. “You hear people say, ‘Wait a minute! In my company, we’ve cut all of our costs 30 percent. What’s their problem? We’re doing this, why can’t they do it?’ “

I don’t think the US wants to end up with unemployment rates in the mid 20’s so let’s take a look at how Spain got to this poor predicament.  From the NPR article, there are two main reasons for Spain’s woes.

Unions

“One reason is the civil service’s strong union contracts; another is the sheer number of civil servants in Spain. Bureaucrats, doctors, teachers and other public workers amount to 2.6 million people, more than 11 percent of the population. That makes politicians think twice about crossing them.”

Michigan and Indiana are the latest states to vote for Right-To-Work legislation and while this is a small victory, Unions still have way too much power in the Midwest, California and the North East.  We must recognize that these outdated dinosaurs are destroying business (and our children’s education) and must be limited.

We can keep shipping jobs overseas and feeding fat cat union bosses or we can recognize we live in a global economy and adjust accordingly.  There isn’t much time left.

Culture

“Spaniards also have a different attitude toward the state. The Pew Research Center recently found that while 6 in 10 Americans say they want to be free of interference from the state, more than 6 in 10 Spaniards say the opposite — that it’s the government’s job to make sure nobody is in need.”

When a country’s culture changes to the point where a majority of people think the Government exists to give them things, the country is lost.  As the blog, Two Heads Are Better Than One, pointed out here, once that culture shift happens, there is no quick fix.  The reelection of Obama and other Leftists who tickle the low information electorate with anti-business/class warfare memes and promises of increased entitlement spending has shown me that the US has crossed over to the point where a majority of voters believe the government exists to provide freebies.

Spain believes that their hope resides with their Government and look how that has worked out for them.  Do we think the US will fare better if we follow the same path?

Are You Willing To Dream Again?

The following video from Dan Stevers, was shown at the beginning of my church’s worship service today and I found it incredibly inspirational and motivational.  I hope you do to.

The text of the video is below and a link to the video is at the bottom.

Every kid dreams about big adventures.

But at some point the dream dies.

We settle for less.

Blend in.

And put up walls.

“Welcome to the real world, kid.”

But you were created for more.

You are a child of God.

You were created for an extraordinary life.

A life like Jesus’

You were meant to change the world.

You were created for an earth shaking life.

Full of compassion.

Overflowing with God’s love.

God became Man to live among us.

He directly involved himself in the world’s brokenness.

And so must we.

Jesus cared for the broken.

The sick.

The poor.

And so can we.

Jesus came to get messy.

Emotionally.

Physically.

Relationally.

Socially.

And so should we.

Are you willing to trust God?

Are you willing to dream again?

Are you willing to change the world?

ISS Viewing Guide

ISS_ULF3_STS-129

The International Space Station (ISS) is an awe inspiring sight in the night sky and if you’ve never had the opportunity to see it, then this post should help you out.

The ISS has been in operation for over 10 years and orbits the Earth at varying altitudes but on average stays around 350 km above the surface (although recently the average orbital altitude has been changed to 400 km).  The ISS is roughly the size of a football field and if you are interested, other facts and figures of the ISS can be found here.

You may not know it, but you can see details of the ISS (i.e. its solar panels) with cheap binoculars as it orbits overhead.  Since the ISS travels so quickly across the sky (orbiting the Earth every 90 minutes means it travels around 27,000 km/hour), the best viewing tools are your own eyes and binoculars.  I’ve used my manual telescope (10” Newtonian reflector) to catch short glimpses of the ISS but I have to lead the scope ahead of the ISS path in hopes of catching it across the field of view and this VERY difficult and I only recommend this method for those who are very experienced with their telescope.

So don’t worry about fancy telescopes or huge binoculars when going outside to view the ISS.  Even on the best of viewing occasions, you’ll only have about 5 minutes to see it pass overhead so viewing the ISS doesn’t require a lot of preparation or take too much time out of your busy schedule.

The only site you need to visit to give you a heads up on ISS viewing opportunities is heavens-above.   Register your location at this site and then click on the ISS link to give you times when the ISS will be overhead in your area.  The page for today in my area looks like this:

iss

The table’s 11 columns are self explanatory but I’ll give further explanation if you aren’t familiar with these astronomical terms.

Column 2 is the brightness of the ISS and the more negative the number indicates a brighter view of the ISS.  In the chart above, 11-DEC-12 will be one of the brightest viewings in my area and as I’ll explain below, it will also be the date that will afford the most viewing time of the ISS.

The rest of the chart is divided into three sections – When/Where the ISS first appears, When/Where it will be at its highest point and when/where it will disappear.   The ‘ALT’ column corresponds to the altitude (in degrees) the ISS will be above the horizon and ‘AZ’ is the direction (North, East, South, West).

For example: On 11-DEC-12 the ISS will first appear at 6:37 pm 10 degrees high in the Southwest, will reach its highest point at 6:41 pm 67 degrees high in the Northwest (90 degrees is directly overhead) and will disappear at 6:42 37 degrees high in the North-Northeast.

The total viewing time on 11-DEC-12 in my area will only be about 5 minutes but this is an excellent viewing opportunity because the ISS will be high enough in the sky to be above trees and this will allow me an opportunity to point my binoculars at it.  The 67 degrees altitude will also allow a comfortable viewing with binoculars since I’ll be holding my head about 2/3rds of the way between level and straight up.  Viewing an object at 90 degrees to the horizon always affords the best possible viewing detail (because the object is at its closest approach) but tilting your neck at this angle for too long is uncomfortable and makes it difficult to track a fast moving object with binoculars or a telescope.

You will notice that the ISS viewing times are only at dawn and dusk and there is a good reason for this.  The only reason we can ‘see’ the ISS is because of the sunlight is reflecting off it and this only happens when the Sun is either rising or setting (if the ISS passes over us at midnight the Sun is on the other side of the Earth and therefore its light is shielded from the ISS by the Earth).

One final thought regarding the Heavens-Above site – The ISS is just one of many objects that you can view in the night sky with your naked eye or binoculars.  On the Heavens-Above website, you can find times when other satellites, comets and planets will be overhead in your location and most of these are visible with the naked eye!

You can also check out a previous post which gives you instructions on how you can catch a glimpse of our solar system’s largest planet (Jupiter) this winter.

Take time over this holiday season to go outside and look up!

Union Dinosaurs Move Closer To Extinction

wispro6

As the WSJ reports, Michigan passed Right to Work legislation in both the House and Senate today and while the details of the two bills need to be reconciled and the Republican Governor needs to sign it, Unions appear to be on the verge of a crushing defeat in the heartland of Union Thuggery.

“Once a bedrock for organized labor, Michigan is now on the path to loosen unions’ ability to in effect compel workers to join their ranks.”

“Michigan’s governor and legislative leaders on Thursday declared their support for a right-to-work bill that would ban labor contracts requiring employees to pay union dues whether they join or not.”

“The state Senate and House of Representatives passed different versions of the legislation after lawmakers introduced bills in both chambers, with supporters predicting final passage by the end of the year. Republicans, the effort’s main backers, have a majority in both chambers. The House voted on party lines, by 58 to 52, while the legislation passed in the Senate with a few Republicans opposing.”

The Leftists on the #MIUnion twitter hash tag have started the same whining that we saw on the #WIUnion hash tag last year when Wisconsin passed legislation to limit collective bargaining of public service unions.  Take a look at some of the lunacy on both these hash tags tonight.

miunion2So forcing workers to pay union dues to wealthy union bosses is considered Democracy?  How about giving workers the choice to make their own decisions?  That is a better definition of Democracy to me.

wiunion3Yes, by all means necessary, please supply the same game plan to Michigan that Wisconsin used in the Scott Walker Recall election.   We know how well that worked out!

wiunion4I have to agree here.  Let’s hope the results are the same too!

wiunion5And how did all that time in the rotunda work out for you?  Oh right, you lost in a landslide!

wiunion6 Yes, here is the often quoted Lincoln phrase that Leftists twist to show support for Unions.  Notice that Lincoln said “labor” and not “labor unions.”’  There’s a big difference there.

It appears that the joy I received in watching the Wisconsin Union idiots fail miserably will be repeated in Michigan and I can’t wait for their demise.  I hope that liberals pump as much union dollars as they can into Michigan for another failed attempt to recall the governor and overturn the law that was legally passed by elected representatives.

We all know how this will end and in case you forgot, go here.

It’s Cliffs All The Way Down

_origin_Cliff-diving-11

I’ve been saying since October that it was in the best interest of our country for this Fiscal Cliff thing to happen.  No compromises, no back room deals, no voting present, etc.  Just let it happen.

I’ll show how going over the Fiscal Cliff is not only the lesser of all the other evils that can come out of these negotiations but how toggling this option will give the best chance to insure we have enough Conservatives in Congress to pick up the pieces once the inevitable collapse happens.

But first, let’s review what it will mean to go over the Fiscal Cliff.

What Is It?

Both CNN Money and The Heritage Foundation have great summaries of the Fiscal Cliff and I’ll use pieces of those articles to give you an overview.  Many may not know this but the This Fiscal Cliff was a bill passed by Congress and signed by Obama in August of 2011 and is called the Budget Control Act.

Here is what will happen if we go over the cliff.

1)      Tax Increases across the board:

“Seven different categories of tax policy expire on January 1, causing a $494 billion tax increase in just one year. This is uncharted territory: Never has there been such a steep tax increase in a single year.”

“Most of this massive tax increase stems from the expiration of the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts implemented under President George W. Bush. There is also the payroll tax cut, the alternative minimum tax patch, and a host of other policies that expire at year’s end. In addition, five of the 18 tax increases built into Obamacare are scheduled to go into effect. Families will bear the brunt of this tax increase among American households, with an average increase of over $4,100 in taxes.”

And there are more tax increases:

Income tax rates: Rise to 15%, 28%, 31%, 36% and 39.6%, up from 10%, 15%, 25%, 28%, 33% and 35%.

Capital gains rate: Rises to 20% from 15% for most filers.

Qualified dividend rate: Rises to one’s top income tax rate, up from 15% for most filers.

Child tax credit: Falls to $500 per child from $1,000. The refundable portion also reduced.

American Opportunity Tax Credit: Expires. The lesser value HOPE tax credit for college tuition is reinstated. Several smaller education tax benefits also expire.

Earned Income Tax Credit: Expansion of eligibility for the credit expires.

Marriage penalty relief: Expires. Effectively that means a low- or middle-income two-earner couple will owe more to the IRS than they would if they were single making the same income.

Estate tax: Parameters revert to pre-2001 levels. The exemption level falls to $1 million from $5 million; and the top tax rate on taxable estates rises to 55%, up from 35%.

Well, that will suck but you know what?  The pain needs to be shared by all of the US for voting for the same regime that caused this pitiful recovery, our credit downgrade and our debt to surpass our GDP.  Tough times will be on the horizon for sure but sometimes you need to be taught a lesson the hard way.

2)      Sequestration:

“The Budget Control Act of 2011 (BCA), a product of last summer’s debt-ceiling deal, increased the debt limit by $2.1 trillion in exchange for spending cuts. The BCA first established caps on discretionary spending to accomplish $900 billion in savings over 10 years and then tasked a “super committee” with finding at least $1.2 trillion more in savings. The super committee’s failure to reach agreement triggered sequestration—automatic budget cuts—totaling $1.2 trillion (including interest savings) over nine years. Sequestration cuts begin on January 2, 2013.”

“The Department of Defense would bear the greatest burden—49.5 percent of total cuts in 2013—even though it accounts for only 16.8 percent of total spending. About $55 billion of those cuts will hit in January 2013.”

But non-Defense spending will be cut by the same amount:

“$55 billion will be cut from projected levels of nondefense spending, which includes things like education, food inspections and air travel safety. Budget experts estimate the cuts will result in at least an 8% cut to programs, projects and activities.”

It sucks that we have to cut the Defense Budget in these uncertain times but if that means we cut the rest of the Federal budget across the board then so be it.  If this is the only way we can get spending cuts then we should take it.

3)      The Doc Fix:

“Medicare is set for another crisis point come December 31, when Congress’s latest “doc fix” agreement expires. As part of the Balanced Budget Act of 1997, Congress adopted the Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) formula to pay doctors for treating Medicare patients. The SGR’s formula led Congress to choose between paying doctors less and patching together short-term fixes to keep reimbursing doctors.”

“Unless Congress patches together another doc fix agreement before December 31, physicians will see a 27 percent decrease in pay, a situation that will make it unaffordable for many doctors to continue accepting Medicare patients. This could leave millions of seniors without care.”

Medicare needs to be reformed and our representatives in Washington have resisted the adult conversations required to reform this out of control entitlement program.  This sounds harsh but maybe after we have our citizens unable to obtain proper medical care due to doctors exiting the Medicare program we’ll have the motivation to have these talks.

4)      Unemployment Benefits Reduced:

“The federal extension expires. That means workers who lose their jobs after July 1, 2012, will only receive up to 26 weeks in state unemployment benefits, down from as many as 99 weeks in state and federal benefits that had been available until recently. “

“By one estimate, more than 2 million claimants will lose their benefits by January.”

Extended Unemployment benefits have caused the Unemployment rate to remain high as more people opted for government handouts as opposed to taking a sub optimal job and once we go over the Fiscal Cliff, those people will be forced to find jobs.

In Summary, going over the Fiscal Cliff will involve tax increases for almost every American and budget cuts that will also affect most Americans.  It’s going to be painful and will most certainly plunge us into another Recession if not a Depression.  There will be tough times ahead for all of us for sure if we go over the Fiscal Cliff but it is what we must do.

Why We Should Go Over It

There are only three scenarios that can play out in these negotiations and all of them are bad for our country so I’m advocating the one that will do the most to convince Americans that Team Obama and his Keynesian ways are destructive for our country and (this is key) will leave enough Republicans in Congress to pick up the pieces and lead us to a true recovery.

The “Give Obama Everything he wants” scenario states that the Republicans in the House and Senate should give up this battle in an attempt to win the war.  They will vote ‘present’ for any Obama proposal and then watch the country fall into a Greece style austerity nightmare and Depression.  While I like this option and even suggested something similar in 2011 when Obama proposed his Jobs Bill, this scenario would be political suicide for many Conservative Congressmen who were elected to be the fire wall for these Leftist policies.  Many seats in the House and Senate might be lost to Democrats (or RINOS) and there would be nothing to stop the total destruction of the United States in the coming years.

Obama has made it clear that raising tax rates on the wealthy must be a component of the Fiscal Cliff negotiations so another scenario to avoid the Fiscal Cliff calls for Republicans giving in to this Obama demand.  Again, we could take the approach to try and spin this as giving Obama what he wants and then blaming all bad economic data on him but the water carrying media wouldn’t allow that.  Any further stagnation in economic growth will be blamed on Republicans for not doing enough to raise tax revenue on the wealthy and making the rich pay their “fair share.”  Even though it is obvious that the wealthy already pay more than their fair share, the 2012 elections showed that the American public isn’t interested in math and data.  They’ll believe the never ending campaign memes of Team Obama and still blame those Republicans and their Capitalism loving ways.

As with the 1st scenario, this 2nd option would cause many Conservatives in Congress to lose their seat because they failed to follow through on their pledge to reduce taxes and cut spending.  We’d lose too many seats in Congress if Republicans bowed to Obama’s concessions and there would be nobody left to bring us back from the brink once the Depression hit.

So the only other option is to go over the Fiscal Cliff.  True, Obama and the obliging 4th Estate will still find a way to blame Republicans but this is going to happen no matter what.  It’s up to us and our Conservative leaders to remind the American public that the Fiscal Cliff, aka Budget Control Act, was approved by BOTH parties in Congress and signed by Obama.  It meets Obama’s requirements of a bi-partisan, balanced approach so he has nothing to complain about.  This is what Obama wants and we should remind the American people of this fact.

Going over the Fiscal Cliff will at least allow Conservatives in Congress political cover in coming elections since they performed their role as a firewall by taking the least destructive option on the Fiscal Cliff.

The use of Government scare tactics to get more of our hard earned money in the name of ‘preventing a catastrophe’ is not new.  Even in recent history we have TARP/2009 Stimulus and now, before we’ve even settled the Fiscal Cliff, we have a new cliff called the Dairy Cliff.

Yes, It’s cliffs all the way down.  All the way down to Greece.

We passed the point of painless solutions years ago.  It will have to get a whole lot worse before it gets better so resign yourself to that fact and make preparations.

Let. It. Burn.

How Much Is A Fair Share?

The Leftists will not give up on one of their election winning memes – ‘The Rich need to pay their fair share’ – and I’m getting tired of this lunacy.

Blogger and Twitter superstar @IowaHawkBlog has shown how taking all the profits from wealthy people and corporations won’t solve our debt problem.

I’ve taken a couple of cracks at this from other angles here and here but I think I’ve stumbled on a simple rebuttal to this Leftist meme and it can be summarized with three numbers –> 3-25-50.

Looking at the 2009 IRS tax results (the latest official results I can find), you’ll notice something interesting and I’ve highlighted a portion of the IRS spreadsheet below (yellow line and red fields are the focus).

Those making $200,000 or more per year:

1)      Represented just 2.8% of all income tax filers,

2)      Accounted for 25.8% of the total Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) reported on Income tax returns and

3)      Paid 50.2% of all Federal income taxes.

So rounding off, we can say that 3% of all income tax filers accounted for 25% of all AGI and paid 50% of all federal income taxes!

If that isn’t an example of paying their fair share, I don’t know what is!

Next time you hear a Leftist spouting this meme hit them with 3-25-50!

More Junk Science From The AGW Cult

Fresh on the heels of Hurricane Sandy, the Anthropogenic Global Warming (AGW) cult is seeking to peddle their lies with a new peer reviewed study.  From NBC:

“Projections for sea level rise in coming decades could be too conservative, experts warned Wednesday, saying they found that the rise over the last two decades is much more than predicted by the U.N. scientific body tracking climate signals.”

“In a peer-reviewed study, the experts said satellite data show sea levels rose by 3.2 millimeters (0.1 inch) a year from 1993 to 2011 — 60 percent faster than the 2 mm annual rise projected by the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change for that period.”

And what is causing this rise in sea levels?  Again from the NBC article (emphasis mine):

“The experts added that the faster sea level rise is unlikely to be caused by a temporary ice discharge from Greenland or Antarctica ice sheets because it correlates very well with the increase in global temperature.

So sea levels are rising because the Earth is getting warmer.  That sounds like a good theory but unfortunately the data don’t back it up.  Here are global temperature anomaly graphs from two different data sets going back to 1997.

The global temperature anomalies have been flat for the past 15 years so I don’t see how the ‘scientists’ arrive at the conclusion that the Earth has experienced an increase in global temperatures.  Oh wait, there is one explanation – it’s called cooking the books.

I review the global temperature anomalies and atmospheric CO2 concentrations every three months on this blog and I’m due another update at the end of December but you can find my latest one here.

Goodbye Mary

Mary Schapiro, the Chairwoman of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and “Dear Friend” of Bernie Madoff, announced her resignation today.

In honor of this great day, I’d like to share a portion of a speech from Ms. Shapiro that she gave on 27-JAN-2010 that showed how incompetent this person was to run not only the SEC but any organization in our government (emphasis mine).

“Next, we will consider a recommendation to provide public companies with interpretive guidance on existing disclosure requirements as they relate to business or legislative events on the issue of climate change.”

“What the Commission is considering is whether to provide guidance that can help public companies in determining what does and does not need to be disclosed.”

“It is neither surprising nor especially remarkable for us to conclude that of course a company must consider whether potential legislation — whether that legislation concerns climate change or new licensing requirements — is likely to occur. If so, then under our traditional framework the company must then evaluate the impact it would have on the company’s liquidity, capital resources, or results of operations, and disclose to shareholders when that potential impact will be material. Similarly, a company must disclose the significant risks that it faces, whether those risks are due to increased competition or severe weather. These principles of materiality form the bedrock of our disclosure framework.”

Yes, you read that right.  The Chairwoman of the SEC decided that it was important to have public companies include climate change issues in their disclosures.

Hey Mary, DLTDHYOTWO!!!

Manufacturing Jobs Aren’t Coming Back

The Manufacturing sector is near and dear to my heart but after spending over 20 years working in this space, I came to the conclusion a while ago that manufacturing jobs, as we have characterized them in the past, are not coming back to the US and there is a recent global study that has validated that assumption.

The McKinsey Global Institute has released a study about the future of manufacturing and it is required reading for anyone in that industry as well as policy makers in developed countries.

As countries develop and the Free Market drives companies to seek the lowest cost manufacturing of their products, low skilled/labor intensive jobs move to developing countries.  We’ve seen this in the US as well as other developed countries and this explains the rise in manufacturing in such countries as China.  The following graph from the McKinsey study shows that as a country’s GDP per Capita (a metric showing a country’s growth) increases, the share of manufacturing jobs decreases as a percent of the total.

As I have stated before, this is not necessarily a bad thing.  As a country develops, the lower skilled/lower pay jobs are farmed out to other countries but the high skills/high pay jobs remain in the developed country.  I’d rather have the sweatshops reside in China while keeping the higher skilled jobs in the US since those jobs are safer, have higher salaries and require a more educated public.

The following graph shows how manufacturing in all groups has declined but the labor intensive field has declined far worse.

Again, this should not be a shock or cause for alarm for those of us who believe in the Free Market.

There are several reasons for the decline in labor intensive manufacturing – lower cost labor in developing countries, government regulations (i.e. OSHA), tax advantages, etc. – that would force a company to move jobs to a developing country which decreases the amount of labor intensive jobs in the country.  But there is another reason labor intensive jobs are decreasing in the US and other developed countries – increased productivity.  Advances in factory automation have led to gains in productivity which is good for the company but bad for low skilled labor.

The following graphic shows that the manufacturing sector has contributed 37% of the productivity growth from 1995 to 2005 but manufacturing is responsible for -24% of Job growth from 1996 to 2006.

The money quote is here:

“Two key priorities for both governments and businesses are education and the development of skills. Companies have to build their R&D capabilities, as well as expertise in data analytics and product design. They will need qualified, computer-savvy factory workers and agile managers for complex global supply chains. In addition to supporting ongoing efforts to improve public education—particularly the teaching of math and analytical skills—policy makers must work with industry and educational institutions to ensure that skills learned in school fit the needs of employers.”

The decline in Union membership has a direct correlation to the decline in manufacturing as a percent of GDP and we should not pine for those days when the US was the only game in town with regard to low skilled/labor intensive manufacturing.  We live in a global economy and the US has far more competition for low skilled manufacturing jobs so those days are gone and they are not coming back!  I have written about this before and here is the graph showing the close correlation between Union memberships and Manufacturing jobs as a percent of GDP:

While employment in the manufacturing sector will remain low, it is important to have a manufacturing sector in the US.  Manufacturing goes hand-in-hand with development and if we lose the ability to manufacture widgets (cars, TV’s, computers, tanks, airplanes, etc.) in the US then we’ll soon lose the ability to design/develop those widgets.  It is a matter of national security and economic livelihood to maintain at least a minimal manufacturing sector in the US.

The US should focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education starting in elementary school to develop a talent pool equipped to meet the needs of manufacturing in the 21st century.  This should’ve been done 20 years ago but it’s still not too late.

The ideal model is to have a large pool of R&D scientists, Engineers, Technicians and skilled operators employed in the US to develop products, get them started up in the US factories and transfer them to lower cost manufacturing sites in developing countries once the products are mature.  This model allows the valuable technical resources in the US to remain focused on new product development and innovation that will lead to market capture and increased company profits.

The next decade is critical to US manufacturing and if we can have the courage to confront the brutal fact that low cost, low skilled manufacturing jobs aren’t coming back, then we can be successful in the future.

Thanksgiving Thoughts On The US Healthcare Industry

Now that Obamacare will have 4 years to sink its tentacles into our healthcare system, the 1st class medical care we enjoy in the US is a thing of the past.  It is apparent to anyone who read the bill that once Obamacare is fully implemented, the citizens of the US will experience longer wait times and a lower quality of care.

Medical device companies started cutting back a long time ago, the costs of Obamacare are already being revised up and the pending Medical Device Tax is forcing companies to scale back on R&D and lay people off.  Not to mention the fact that we already have evidence of the failures of socialized medicine in other countries – England’s healthcare system is in the red and Canada’s healthcare system has corruption

It’s all very sad but since this is Thanksgiving, I decided to share a personal story that shows how thankful I have been (note the past tense) of the US healthcare system and how, without it, I might not be able to walk today.

My Story

On the evening of 06-FEB-2006 I was playing in an adult recreational basketball league game and as I was chasing down an opponent and jumped to block his layup, I heard a pop and it felt like my right knee had been hit with a baseball bat.  Upon falling to the court, I noticed that my tibia (shin bone) was dislocated and my patella (knee cap) was resting high in the quadriceps area.

I was rushed to the emergency room and after getting a phone consult from an orthopedic surgeon, it was determined that I had ruptured my patella tendon (the tendon than connects the patella to the tibia) and that I needed surgery.  On 08-FEB-2006 I went in for an MRI and I was scheduled for a patella tendon repair on 10-FEB-2006.  A few days after surgery, I was fitted with a sophisticated brace and started 6 months of physical therapy.

For those who are interested, the details of this surgery can be found here (with a more medically detailed link here) and a picture of my knee during the surgery is shown below (the red arrows showed the rupture in the patella tendon).

I am happy to report that the surgery and subsequent physical therapy allowed me to continue an active lifestyle that I was accustom to before the injury.  I continue to run short distances (but no more marathons for me) and I replaced my weekly long run with a long bike ride which sometimes gets up to 40 miles.  The only time I remember that I have a reconstructed patella tendon is when I bump my knee on a hard surface and the anchors/sutures cause some temporary pain.

But for the most part, my active lifestyle was not impacted from this debilitating injury and it is a testament to modern medicine that I was able to recover from it.  If I had been born 50 years earlier and had a similar injury when I was in my late 30’s, I would’ve, at best, been crippled for life or worst case, developed an infection that would’ve forced amputation or caused death.  Another sobering thought – If my birth in 1969 would’ve occurred in a 3rd world country and not the US, the same life limiting/threatening outcomes would’ve befallen me.

So on Thanksgiving Day in 2012 I give thanks that I lived in a country that valued the Free Market principles which brought about the innovation in the health care industry to ‘invent’ this reconstructive surgery and the competition that allowed me to get the highest quality service in the fastest time.

Will unfortunate souls in a few years be able to obtain the timely, high quality medical service I obtained in 2006?  Remember the timeline I experienced in 2006 with this horrific injury – Within a week of the injury I had visited an emergency room, obtained an MRI, had the surgery and started physical therapy.  I didn’t have to worry about long lines at the ER, bribes to get me moved up on the surgery schedule, red tape from bureaucrats and a shrinking supply of healthcare personnel/devices to accommodate my demand.

Will the healthcare in the US be equal to what I received in 2006 when:

A) More medical personnel are exiting the profession,

B) Fewer R&D dollars are spent by medical device companies,

C) Fewer people are available at medical device companies to produce the products,

D) More restrictions are placed on payments for people in the government option and

E) Hospitals are losing money?

Only a fool says yes.

Heinlein Wisdom

In my youth I was a Science Fiction buff and couldn’t get enough of the likes of Asimov, Forward, Niven, Clarke and Heinlein but it wasn’t until recently that I came across a wonderful quote by Robert Heinlein that sums up the condition in the United States perfectly.

I have read some of Heinlein’s novels, “Stranger in a Strange Land”, “The Cat Who Walks Through Walls”, “The Number of the Beast” and “The Moon is a Harsh Mistress” but I had missed the novel “Time Enough For Love” in which this quote originates:

Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded — here and there, now and then — are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty.

This is known as “bad luck.”

There is another acronym that Heinlein used in the novel “The Moon is a Harsh Mistress” that is also relevant to the US electorate – TANSTAAFL which stands for “There ain’t no such thing as a free lunch.”

Now we have 4 more years of the Obama/Reid regime, Obamacare is here to stay and the Takers are driving the Makers out of society so in a few years even Leftist will learn that TANSTAAFL.

What Has NASA Found On Mars?

NASA scientists have recently made a discovery that could be incredible.

“The exciting results are coming from an instrument in the rover called SAM. “We’re getting data from SAM as we sit here and speak, and the data looks really interesting,” John Grotzinger, the principal investigator for the rover mission, says during my visit last week to his office at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. That’s where data from SAM first arrive on Earth. “The science team is busily chewing away on it as it comes down,” says Grotzinger.”

“SAM is a kind of miniature chemistry lab. Put a sample of Martian soil or rock or even air inside SAM, and it will tell you what the sample is made of.”

“Grotzinger says they recently put a soil sample in SAM, and the analysis shows something earthshaking. “This data is gonna be one for the history books. It’s looking really good,” he says.”

SAM is acronym for the main scientific instrument on the Curiosity rover and it stands for Sample Analysis on Mars and it is basically a chemistry lab that can analyze soil samples to detect for organic compounds (molecules containing Carbon) which are the building blocks for life as we know it on Earth.

Previous attempts to detect organic compounds on Mars by the previous landers failed to detect organic compounds but there is a theory that perchlorates, which are present in the Martian soil, reacted to the testing method (fast heating) and destroyed the organic compounds leaving only CO2.   The SAM on Curiosity has a testing method that will overcome any perchlorates by slowly heating the sample and can detect organic compounds even in the presence of perchlorates.

You might ask why the scientists are not disclosing this discovery now.  Because this is how Science works!  Just because you get a result from one experiment doesn’t mean you can run to the Media and announce your claims.  The experiment must be repeated, under the same controlled conditions, and only after repeated confirmations can the scientist make his claim and write his journal paper.  Patience….

I won’t speculate on what history making discovery the NASA scientists are sitting on but if we do find evidence of organic compounds on Mars, then the theory that life exists on other planets becomes even stronger.

I’ll write more on this once the discovery is finally disclosed but you might want to read a previous blog of mine to get you thinking about what the discovery of life on another planet would mean for life on Earth.  Imagine the possibilities!

Union Thugs Kill More Jobs

If we needed another example of how unions are destroying businesses, we got one last week when Hostess gave up trying to negotiate with the Bakery, Confectionary, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers union (BCTWG) and decided to liquidate their assets.  From the WSJ article:

“Hostess’s owners have decided to liquidate rather than ride out a nationwide strike by one of the largest of its dozen unions, the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union. The Texas-based company owned by the private-equity shop Ripplewood Holdings and other hedge funds essentially gave up. On Friday it shut down its 33 bakeries and 565 distribution centers and prepared to fire nearly 18,500 employees en masse and auction off its brand and recipe portfolio.”

So why did Hostess give up?  Surprise, union regulations that make it all but impossible to conduct normal business was the final nail in this company’s coffin.  From the same WSJ article:

“Hostess posted sales of $2.5 billion in 2011 but lost $341 million and lacked the cash flow to hold out through the bakers union work stoppage that had only lost a few days of production so far. One reason is a labor-rule burden that by comparison makes Detroit look like Hong Kong.”

“The snack giant endured $52 million in workers’ comp claims in 2011, according to its bankruptcy filing this January. Hostess’s 372 collective-bargaining agreements required the company to maintain 80 different health and benefit plans, 40 pension plans and mandated a $31 million increase in wages and health care and other benefits for 2012.”

“Union work rules usually required cake and bread products to be delivered to a single retail location using two separate trucks. Drivers weren’t allowed to load their own vehicles, and the workers who loaded bread weren’t allowed to load cake. On most delivery routes, another “pull up” employee moved products from back rooms to shelves.”

To be fair, America is trying to move away from fatty foods and the decrease in demand probably didn’t help Hostess but it’s also evident that unsustainable, sweet (pardon the pun) Union deals delivered the final death blow to this company.

Right on cue, Union bosses, like Trumka, are blaming Private Equity firms, Wall-Street, Romney, Bain, Bush, etc. for this latest black eye that the union suffered.  But that is not true.

“The problem with Trumka’s lie-filled logic is that Wall Street didn’t call the strike and Trumka fails to address the fact that without Wall Street investors investing in Hostess, the company, with its shrinking market and overly-burdensome union contracts would have likely died years ago.”

There is also a delicious bit of irony to this saga involving the Teamsters and their desire to eliminate the secret ballot for union elections.  The Teamsters, who agreed with the latest deal from Hostess, sought to change their preference for voice voting and asked the BCTWG to use the secret ballot process to vote on their latest strike proposal.

“For the last several years, union bosses have been fighting to effectively eliminate workers’ right to vote through secret-ballot elections on whether or not to become unionized. Yet, with 6700 members’ jobs about to be wiped out, when push came to shove last week—knowing how unions can manipulate other methods of voting—the Teamsters called for the bakers’ union to hold a secret-ballot vote to let members determine whether or not to continue the strike that would close Hostess.”

And for the last bit of irony in this latest Union failure, let’s take a look at the BCTWG union from the Union Facts website.

Unions like to paint company management as the ‘fat cats’ who are only interested in their own earnings and not the wages/salaries of the workers.   A review the top 10 salaries of the BCTWG union seems to show the real ‘fat cats’ are the union bosses:

How did the BCTWG union distribute its political contributions?

As usual, unions are the useful idiots of the Democratic Party.  They funnel almost all their money to elect Democrats but when their jobs are eliminated, their political ‘leaders’ are nowhere to be seen.

Unions are outdated and are destroying businesses all across America and this is just another example.  When will the rest of America stand up to these thugs and realize they are parasites that only seeks to destroy the host?

What We Can Learn From Exit Polls

The GOP is engaged in a much needed post mortem of the 2012 election and looking at the data to see how Romney and other Republicans lost ground in the House, Senate and the White House.  I had my quick reactions the day after but now I’m ready to do more digging in the polling data so that I can do my part to refocus and make sure people are elected in the 2014 elections that believe in Conservative fiscal/economic policies and put the US back on the path to prosperity.

The Washington Post has a great site showing the 2012 Presidential exit poll data in a graphical format that is easy to view and I’ll use that data to make some observations.  Note that the data is taken from national exit polls and there are specific state exit polling for North Carolina, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, New Hampshire, Wisconsin, Colorado and Iowa.

The data are displayed graphically using arrows with the direction showing the change in support percentages (in each demographic group) between Republican and Democratic candidates for the 2008 and 2012 elections.  The data also show how the percent of the overall electorate each demographic group represented.

For example, on the picture below, I hovered my mouse over the “Male” demographic to find that in both the 2008 and 2012 elections, men made up 47% of the overall electorate and Romney gained support with men 52% to 48% in 2012 vs. 2008.

Good News for the GOP

A quick scan of the data show that Romney, and the GOP, actually have some good news from this past election –  In demographics that were comparable between 2012 and 2008 (top issues were only shown for 2012), Romney gained support in 31 of the 40 demographic groups.   Romney even picked up 2 percentage points with Blacks and 1 percentage point with Liberals!

Despite the faux War on Women meme touted by the Leftists, Romney picked up 1 percentage point with women from 2008.  But with Women making up 53% of the electorate, Obama beat Romney in this demographic 55% to 44% and this shows that the GOP has to have a better message to the women in America.

The youth vote also swung in Romney’s favor with the 18-29 demographic as Romney got 37% vs. 32% for McCain in 2008.  But this demographic still went overwhelmingly in favor of Obama in 2012 50% to 37% for Romney and this group is now 19% of the electorate.

The biggest improvement Romney had over the 2008 election came with independent voters.  Independents favored Obama over McCain 52% to 44% in 2008 but Romney actually won this group 50% to 45% in 2012!

Then how did Romney lose with all these gains he made compared to the 2008 election?

Bad News for the GOP

Blacks, Hispanics and Asians (who comprise 26% of the electorate) still favored Obama in such huge numbers that the small gains Romney made in the other demographic groups couldn’t overcome these powerful voting blocs.  Blacks, Hispanics and Asians went for Obama over Romney 93% to 6%, 71% to 27% and 73% to 26% respectively.

The voters who earn less than $50,000 per year make up 41% of the electorate and they also went for Obama in large numbers (60% to 38%) and this was unchanged from the 2008 election.  Conservatives have to get their message to this group and explain to them that Conservative economic principles work for all Americans and not just the wealthy which is in contrast to what the Democratic talking points like to say.

Those who consider themselves Conservatives went to Romney (no shocker) but they only favored Romney over Obama 82% to 17%.  Why was this not higher?

The Washington Post site didn’t have exit polling on Gay, Lesbian or Bisexual (GLB) demographic but Five Thirty Eight did have data on how this demographic voted in 2012 and these results also show an area where the GOP can improve.  According to their data, GLB made up 5% of the electorate and they went for Obama over Romney 76% to 22%.

According to this site, there were 124,691,305 votes cast in the 2012 presidential election and Obama won over Romney by just 3,694,622 votes.

If 5% of the total electorate was comprised of GLB voters and 76% of them voted for Obama and 22% of them voted for Romney, that means 4,738,270 of GLB voted for Obama and 1,371,604 voted for Romney.  The difference between the GLB votes for Obama over Romney amounted to 3,366,666 votes which is basically the margin of victory for Obama in the popular vote.

Conclusion

The GOP made improvements in almost all demographic groups but the traditional Democratic voting blocs still favor Obama and that was the difference in the election.   The GOP needs to address these weaknesses they have with Women, Minorities, Low income earners and GLB if they ever hope to win the White House again.

Going Galt Lite

Sometimes you have to show tough love.

For those of us with children, we can all appreciate the following scenario.  You see your child about to do something stupid (like touch a hot stove) and you jump into action.  You shout at the child to stop and he just sort of ‘pauses’ and looks at you funny.  The initial order from the parent was not enough and now the child needs further evidence why he should stop doing something that looked so ‘right’ (the kid will grow up to be a Republican – Trust but verify).  The parent then explains WHY it’s a bad idea to touch a hot stove and if the parent has done a good enough job of tailoring his message and the child has advanced enough in his comprehension skills, danger will be averted and the child goes away wiser about the workings of the world.  If either (or both) the parent’s communication or the toddler’s comprehension skills are lacking then the kid will not be convinced and do it anyway.

Sometimes the parent will see the child about to do the very thing they warned them about but instead of regurgitating the same admonishments, the parent chooses to teach the child a lesson by allowing him to make a mistake.  It’s called tough love and it’s one of the hardest things I have ever done as a parent.  I know that I should ask my daughter if her assignments are done or if she has to study for a test but she is old enough now to know better.  Sometimes she needs to get an F to realize there are penalties for some of her bad decisions and in many ways, this is a better teaching tool that hearing her old man rant.

This tough love teaching method works with adults too and after the results of the past election I’ve decided to do what I can to show tough love to my country in hopes that we can learn a lesson and recover.

Conservatives have shouted at the top of their lungs the past 4 years about our ballooning debt, the dangers of Obamacare, the deleterious business consequences of over regulation, the need to address out of control entitlement spending (like Social Security and Welfare), the lies of Obama’s Class warfare meme, why taxing the rich won’t help and the failures of Keynesian economics.

It didn’t work because the American voters decided to keep the same people in power that we’ve had during the last 4 disastrous years.

So what is a Conservative to do?  Give up?  Hell no!  I will continue to blog, tweet and talk to people face-to-face about how the Conservative Fiscal and Economic policies provide the highest probability for a country’s entire population to live free, gain wealth and improve their quality of life.  I’ll also work within the GOP to pick the best candidates for local, state and national offices and seek to change the party’s position on social issues as I outlined in an earlier post.

But there is one aspect of my life that I will change in the coming years to do my small part to help teach this country a lesson.  I’ve decided to go “Galt Lite” with my money.  The phrase ”Going Galt” gets its meaning from the Atlas Shrugged novel where the makers/producers of America decided to intentionally withdraw from the Market because their government punished them for making the right decisions and took their profits and gave it to those who made poor decisions.  It’s a work of fiction but over the past few years the book has looked more like a book of prophesy.

I’m not independently wealthy like the characters in the book so I can’t go completely off the grid.  I still need to work to provide for my family and I’m not willing to take my young kids to a farm and live off the land for years and deprive them of an education and the advantages offered in our modern society.  But there are ways in which I can help to starve the beast and limit the amount of hard earned money that the Federal government can take from me and this in turn will limit how much money can be given to those who choose government handouts over a job.

-> I will max out my 401k contributions which will limit my pre-tax income so the federal governments take less from each paycheck.

-> My charitable contributions will go only to people and organizations that don’t waste their money on political contributions and bureaucracy.

-> Any large purchases to support my hobbies (which includes golf, gulp!) that are not necessary will be delayed.

-> When I do have to buy something, I’ll look first on the internet for used items or buy them at garage sales/locally owned stores where I know the owner.

-> I will step up the maintenance on my cars, house and other major appliances to keep them in good shape so I don’t have to spend even more money to replace them.

-> Any stocks I was planning to sell in the next 1-2 years will be sold before the end of 2012 so I can avoid paying higher capital gains tax rates that will most likely kick in starting in 2013.

-> I have already moved a majority of my 401k to Money market/Stable value funds and will sit tight for a couple of years as the Stock Market will likely take a nose dive.

-> I will not shop at any store that is affiliated with a union and I’m glad that the automobiles I do own were made in Right-To-Work states.

-> I will cut back on the small things like watering the yard, reducing cable channels, buying generic, keeping the house lights to a minimum, bring my lunch to work, etc.

Basically, I will try (to the extent I can) to live a minimalist lifestyle for 2 years in an effort to limit how much of my money gets funneled to the takers.  Starve the Beast!

I’d be interested in hearing other ideas around how we can collectively ‘Go Galt’ and help starve the beast.

This Is Why I Do Not Fear China

For several decades China has seen incredible GDP growth and the US has seen jobs shipped to the rising super power.  This has prompted serious talk of China overtaking the US as the largest economy and talk of retribution, via crackdowns on their currency manipulation, has been touted by every Presidential candidate during this period.

I have always believed that while China was an economic threat to the US in the short term, we had nothing to worry about in the long term as long as we stuck to Free Market Capitalism.  The Knowledge Based Economy would force low tech, low pay manufacturing jobs to China but the US would maintain high tech, high pay manufacturing jobs and the all important Research and Development jobs in startups and incubators around the world.  Eventually, as the US retooled for this new economy, there would be room for both countries to flourish in the world economy and the US would maintain their #1 economy.

But there are reports coming out of China now that their economic/political model may be crumbling under its own weight sooner than I had thought.

GDP Growth Slowed

China’s GDP growth rate is dropping.

“China’s economy grew 7.4% in the third quarter compared to the previous year, the National Bureau of Statistics said Wednesday, marking a deceleration from an 7.6% growth rate in the prior quarter.”

“China’s economy has grown at an average of around 10% a year for the past three decades, allowing the country to rocket past international competition to become the world’s second largest economy. Along the way, China’s markets have opened to the rest of the world, trade has increased dramatically and many of China’s citizens have joined an emerging middle class.”

I’ll admit that while growth is slowing in China, it’s not panic time and the US and most of the other countries of the world would kill for GDP growth rates that China is seeing.  This chart shows GDP growth of China compared to the US:

China and US GDP chart

If you are interested in diving deeper into China’s GDP numbers over the past 30 years, click on the links below:

A great graph showing the world economies over the past 2000 years

What is behind China’s GDP growth rate?  The answer may surprise you.  Hint – It’s not exports.

Growth too fast to be sustained by crumbling infrastructure

China looks more impressive from across the Pacific than it does inside the country as this NPR article points out.

“I’m not as optimistic as many people in the Western world think about China,” says Xu Dingbo, associate dean of the China Europe International Business School in Beijing.”

“If you want to be the world leader, I think China is far from ready,” adds Wang Jianmao, his fellow business school professor.”

“Andy Xie, a Shanghai-based economist, is even more downbeat.”

“The efficiency is going down,” he says. “Corruption is widespread. So I think this is the crossroads for China.”

The days are over where China was thought of as the de facto choice for low cost manufacturing and now there is competition from other Asian countries.   Furthermore, their infrastructure is showing signs of collapsing under the weight of super fast growth.

“The government has helped boost economic growth by spending a fortune on infrastructure. Much of it is needed, but sometimes money is poorly spent or siphoned off. Since 2011, eight bridges have collapsed around the country, according to China’s state-run media. Most analysts blame government corruption.”

The NPR story goes on to explain how a bridge, that had $8 million in government money allocated, has needed major repairs after only 2 years and it turns out that only about $3 million actually went to construction costs.  This type of corruption is typical of Socialistic style economies and we should not be surprised by this.  Remember the US’s “Shovel Ready Jobs” of the 2009 Stimulus?

It’s also getting difficult for private, small businesses to get loans.

“China’s state-owned banks often fund these projects. But if you are a small or midsized private business — the kind that produces most of the jobs in China — getting a bank loan is very tough.”

And the rate of return on state sponsored investments is terrible.

“But economist Xu says many state firms are woefully inefficient.”

“You see lots of nice buildings, highways, beautiful cities like Beijing and Shanghai,” says Xu, “but if you look at the real financial numbers of many Chinese companies, the picture is very bad. It’s horrible.”

“Xu says the largest 102 state-owned companies had an average return based on assets of about 3.5 percent.”

“For nearly half of the assets in China, the rate of return is less than depositing money in a bank,” he says. “That means we are wasting lots of resources in China now.”

This is not a description of an economic/political climate that is conducive to future economic growth.  By now the Private sector should be booming (from all that government stimulus) but that isn’t happening and the growth from the Public sector is worse than letting the money sit in a bank and draw interest.  Low GDP growth numbers are on the horizon.

Social Instability

This is the biggest reason I have never feared China in the long term – Eventually the people will revolt and Freedom, that innate characteristic that is present in all humans, will win out.

China provides us with a contemporary example of how futile it is to think that large governments can control their citizens’ feelings, desires and moods.   This NPR story details how China has an official policy called ‘Stability Maintenance’ that seeks to maintain order and how this policy has created the exact opposite of its intentions.

“In China, government critics call it “the era of stability maintenance.” It’s their label for the government’s policy over the past decade of prizing internal stability above all else, no matter the cost.”

“Beijing this year is spending $111 billion on its domestic security budget, which covers the police, state security, militia, courts and jails. This is now higher than its publicly disclosed military expenditure.”

I suggest you read the whole article because it is a frightening account of what happens when an oppressive government tries to ‘keep the peace’ through actions that limits freedom.  The tools employed by China are legion and involve wire taps, directives from state security agents, suppressing dissent (by paying people to not protest or rewarding citizens for ratting out other protesters), beating children and a media that reports lies.

This quote, at the end of the NPR story, says it all:

“And so the paradox: The more stability is “maintained,” the less stable the country becomes.”

This is true of peoples’ freedom and also the Free Market, the more a government tries to maintain stability by circumventing the natural process, the more instability is produced.

This reminds me of Quinn’s 1st Law:

“Liberalism always generates the exact opposite of its stated intent.”

This is why I do not fear China.  But I do fear, in a very real sense, that the US will turn into China and after the last election, I’m not so sure we aren’t already on that path.

A Divided America

There’s a ton of analysis on the Election this week but this one by Marketplace was unique and I found the results very interesting.

“In our Two Americas coverage of the 2012 presidential election, we’re dividing the nation in two using a variety of numbers to see how each candidate performed in various segments of the economy.”

The authors wanted to know what the Electoral College results would look like if the United States was divided into 2 groups based on median income rankings.  One group contains the 25 states with the highest median income and the other group contains the 25 states with the lowest median income.

Conventional wisdom tells us that über 1%-er Romney and the Republicans mainly do the bidding of the wealthy and Obama and the Democrats represent the poor.  Not according to this:

Romney carried the lower wage states and Obama carried the higher wage states and both results weren’t even close!  Remind Leftists of this fact the next time they trot out that meme.

The next analysis was performed like the first but instead of dividing the US based on median income; they used the state unemployment rates.  One group contains the states with Unemployment rates over 8% (Out of Work America) and the other group contains states with unemployment rates below 8% (Working America).

The Out of Work group went overwhelmingly for Obama and the Working group went to Romney but just barely.

So if you are out of work (which is a direct results of the policies of the Obama, Pelosi and Reid) you decided to give Obama another 4 years.  That makes a lot of sense, right?

This is just another example of how deeply divided the US is based on 4 years of Mr. Hope and Change.  Imagine how polarized we’ll be in 2016.

Post Election Thoughts

Wow, I really got that wrong!

Prior to last night I was laboring under the assumption that there were still enough people in the United States who understood Free Market economics and they would elect Mitt Romney as the next President.

Less than 24 hours ago I believed the polls were wrong and there was a large silent majority of people who were fed up with rising government handouts and they would elect someone who would implement fiscally conservative policies that would put America back on the path to success.

On Tuesday I hoped there were enough people in the US who were sick of the divisive leadership of Obama and they wanted to bring Americans together again and stop this class warfare rhetoric of the Left by giving people like Elizabeth Warren a resounding defeat.

I was really, really, really wrong.

In politics, Assuming, Believing and Hoping can lead to disappointment and I learned that valuable lesson last night.

Starting in 1976, it took the American people 4 years to realize that Leftist policies were bad for our country but with similar Leftist policies being implemented over the past 4 years, the American electorate sent a message last night that they liked the past 4 years so much, they want more of it.  That means our country is on firmly on the path that leads to Greece-like meltdowns.  And the end of that path is not pretty.

So here is my take-away from last night’s election – The American people have changed their views on fiscal and social issues and I have made the decision to dedicate my time, over the coming years, to push the GOP to strengthen its message in the former and change its message in the later.

Fiscal Issues

The nation has reached a tipping point where there are enough people who are addicted to government freebies that they will vote for a Democrat (who promises to keep those freebies coming) every year no matter what the issues are.  I’ll admit that the Left’s plan was masterful and genius – Slowly, over decades, convince a large segment of society that they are dependent on the government (Food Stamps, Welfare, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and Unemployment Insurance) and then use them as guaranteed votes every two years.  When Conservative candidates try to show people how to break the chains of government oppression, the Left trots out their class warfare tactics and then proceeds to demonize the people who are successful.  Of course those arguments aren’t true but they tug at the heart strings and win elections for the Left.

History has proven that free market capitalism is the best economic system to provide people from all socio-economic levels with the best possibility to succeed and improve the quality of their lives.  I will never stop fighting for this and will continue engage anyone who brings their class warfare drivel and tell me the wealthy need to pay their fair share.  As an aside – You’ll notice that the Left never tells us what the definition of a ‘fair share’ is nor do they provide mathematical proof that taxing the wealthy will improve the nation and bring down the debt.

Right now, people have forgotten what a real economic recovery looks like and how much better they’d be under a limited government/Free Market but once we can get fiscal conservatives elected then people will be won over to this philosophy as their livelihoods improve.

But before fiscal conservatives can govern, they must be elected and this brings me to….

Social Issues

It is obvious that social issues such as legalizing gay marriage and amnesty for illegal immigrants are not fringe issues.  They are embraced by a significant portion of our population and you can no longer choose to sit on the sidelines on these issues.  Like it or not, many people voted against Republican candidates yesterday because of the GOP’s official stance on these 2 key issues.

Don’t believe me?  Go find one of your Left leaning/Independent friends and ask them this hypothetical question.  “Would you have voted for Mitt Romney if he had run a campaign where he repeatedly stated that he was for same sex unions and a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants?

Even though Romney was very moderate on social issues, he was painted with a broad brush by idiots like Akin and Mourdock who just couldn’t resist talking about rape and abortion.  This hurt him and people who only casually pay attention to the issues only remembered these stupid comments and tagged them with Romney because he also had an “R” at the end of his name.

I have said before that I have absolutely no issue with gay marriage/civil unions (live and let live, just don’t force a church to go against its beliefs and perform them) and I am in favor of a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants so it’s not a far stretch for me to advocate Republican candidates who yield to social issues and stand firm on fiscal ones.  In my opinion, this is what the GOP must do in order to field candidates that can govern and eventually rescue our country.

But there’s more to it….

That’s not to say that we stop hammering the MSM.  We must hold them accountable because in some respects they are the real enemy to prosperity and not the Leftist candidates.

That’s not to say we change our religious beliefs with regard to social issues.  We can evangelize the rest of America in hopes they are moved to our position but the political podium is not the place to talk about what the Bible says/doesn’t say about gay marriage.

That’s not to say we stop picking candidates that are political fighters who are willing to play in the dirty world of national politics.  When Romney tried to talk substance/economics/issues, the Left talked Big Bird, Binders and Class Warfare.  We must recognize that we lost the messaging war in this election so in future elections we have to get our hands dirty, participate in less intellectual aspects of politics and use political judo against the Left via Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals.

That’s not to say we don’t continue to hammer Leftist pundits over the coming 4 years.  We should use every opportunity (Unemployment Rate, Stock Market, Gas Prices, Debt, GDP, etc.) to show how their Keynesian policies are failing America.

The nation has changed and if the GOP doesn’t recognize this then they are dead as a relevant party and there will be nobody to help stop the slide off the fiscal cliff (the real one, not that fake one being talked about right now).  I have kids that are 8 and 11 years old so “Going Galt” is not an option for me.  I can’t just sit back and watch Liberals destroy America and laugh when they finally realize that their policies are wrong for a society.  I have to keep fighting to reform America and put it back on a path to fiscal prosperity so I’ll have a country worth handing off to my children when they get my age.

More on this later….

History Repeats Itself

There is a great blog post from @SooperMexican that shows Obama in a bomber jacket.

This reminded me of another fatal attempt of a Leftist to promote himself as pro-military shortly before a Presidential election.

Let’s hope Obama gets the same benefit that Dukakis got from his tank photo op.

Vote For Romney!

Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can’t Lose!

There isn’t much more to be said from me with regard to why I’m voting for Romney on Tuesday and for that reason I will have no new blog posts until Wednesday.  For those new to my website, here is a collection of election related posts that you may enjoy.
