What Liberals Really Want (Part 2)

(See here for Part 1)

If you ever doubted that true Leftist ideology was bad for America, then Katrina vanden Heuvel’s (@KatrinaNation) blog post last week in The Nation should remove any shred of doubt you had.

Obama has been ducking concern over his comments supporting a redistribution of wealth (taxing the successful and funneling the money to those on government assistance) but Ms. vanden Heuvel thinks Redistribution is too timid and instead she favors something called “Pre-distribution.”  What is Pre-Distribution?  You can read the whole article but here are the money quotes from the piece (emphasis mine):

“Critiquing what he calls mere “pity-charity liberalism,” Nation contributor and Roosevelt Institute fellow Mike Konczal last year framed the question this way:”

Do we more aggressively set up the rules to favor some outcomes over others, or do we emphasize making markets “free”…and then deal with bad outcomes after the fact? Do we want unions and regulations to create workplaces designed for human dignity, or do we let the dice roll as they may and compensate people after the fact through transfers?”

“Indeed, there’s no good reason for government to just sit back, let one-percenters beat up employees and customers, and then try to mitigate the harm with redistribution”

There you have it!  “Pre-Distribution” has its core belief that Government should be MORE involved in our lives and especially with regard to day-to-day business in the Private sector.  By all means, let’s have Unions setting all workplace rules and let’s abandon the Free Market and trust the Federal Government pick the winners and losers by funding companies that they choose.

If we adopted Ms. vanden Heuvel’s policies we’d have no manufacturing in the country because Unions and Regulations would see to it that no meaningful work could ever take place and companies would be forced to move outside the country.  Those who work in the Private sector (and especially manufacturing) know that we are already seeing the effects of Unions and over regulation so if we want to turn the whole country into a giant Flint Michigan, then keep voting for Leftists.  For further reading, follow this link to see what happened in Michigan when Unions were allowed free run of the place.

Do we need more examples of how government regulations are destroying business in the United States?  Do we need more examples showing how woefully inadequate the Federal Government performs when picking winners and losers?  Chevy Volt, Solyndra, Banking crisis, Cash for Clunkers and the 2009 Stimulus are all examples of the Federal Government interfering with the “invisible hand” of the Free Market and in the end, it was the US Citizens that got smacked.

To someone like Ms. vanden Heuvel, who was born into luxury, educated in an Ivy League school and spent her entire career in publishing, Pre-Distribution might sound like the perfect solution to all of America’s problems but to Americans who have worked in the Private sector, managed businesses, innovated, built wealth and stimulated the economy, Pre-Distribution sounds just like Socialism.  Make no mistake about it, Pre-Distribution is just a fancy word for Socialism and history (even recent history) has already shown us what a pitiful failure that system is.

Is there any doubt what a disaster the United States will turn into if Leftists are allowed full reign of our Federal Government?  Do not be ignorant about this – Leftists want nothing less than full Socialism for this country.  Don’t let them succeed!  Vote!

Obama Didn’t Change That

President Obama admitted today that his first term as President has been a complete failure based on the critera set forth by himself and that he’ll be a failure as long as he remains President of the United States.

“The fact that we haven’t been able to change the tone in Washington is dissapointing,” Obama said, in response to a question about his greatest failure. “The most important lesson I’ve learned is you can’t change Washington from the inside. You can only change it from the outside.”

Remember that during Obama’s 2008 campaign he said that he was going to “fundamentally transform America” but now he admits he can’t even change a city. A Presidential candidate that campaigned on Hope and Change now admits that he is powerless to change anything about Washington and that change can’t come from within DC.

So to sum up – a) Obama failed to fulfill his primary campaign promise and b) he already predicts further failure if given 4 more years because you can’t change Washington from inside (by the way, you don’t get more “inside” Washington than 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue).

If Obama is really interested in change and since he just admitted that you can’t change Washington from within, I have a simple question for Obama. Why are you still running for a second term? Just quit and go affect that change on the outside.

At a minimum, this quote from Obama amounts to someone admitting defeat while still pandering for your vote but here is what really upsets me about his statement. Obama’s words today are ones typically uttered by cowards, wimps and those with small minds. Let me explain….

No matter how high you rise in your profession, you’ll always have a boss that you’ll need to satisfy. Even CEO’s of major corporations answer to the share holders and the Board of Directors and if the CEO isn’t doing what they expect, he is fired. Even Presidents of the United States have a boss since they answer to the American citizens and POTUS can be impeached by Congress if the need arises.

What just happened today was that POTUS got up in front of his boss (the American citizens who saw the interview), admitted that he had not only failed to solve the problems he was hired to fix but (and this is the clincher) he is incapable of solving these problems (because he is inside Washington) and he wants 4 more years in his current job. What would happen if you went into your boss’ office today and told him that you have failed to achieve all your most important goals, you intend to fail at them in the future and you should continue to keep your job?

The most analogous job in the Business world that compares with POTUS is the CEO of a company and if a CEO stood before the Board of Directors and freely admitted that he was incapable of solving the company’s problems then he would be rightfully fired that very day. What good is a leader who can’t lead an organization to highlight problems and solve them? He is worthless.

Poor, pitiful, victim Obama can’t keep his promises because there are too many mean people in Washington who won’t get behind him. Make no mistake, that’s really what he was trying to say here and that is the typical utterance of a person who is incapable of leading.

We have all had jobs where we needed to influence the organization but we had to do it by working with those who either weren’t on our team or didn’t directly report to us. A good leader finds ways to facilitate change in an organization and works with those who oppose him to reach a compromise or get others to adopt his policies. There are leaders in companies all over America who do this every day and many of them don’t even have a typical leadership job title!

Only those who think small and choose to play blame games throw up their hands and surrender when they encounter opposition. Obama deserves to be fired on November 6th!

Romney Was Right

A “secret” video surfaced this week and if you believe the Leftist media, you can go ahead and call the elections off in November, Obama will crush Romney!  But I disagree and in my opinion, this video release will only serve to fire up Team Romney and bring out the Mitt we knew and loved during the Florida Primary.

Let’s first rehash the key points of the “47%” video (emphasis mine):

“There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. That that’s an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what…”

“And I mean the president starts off with 48, 49 … he starts off with a huge number. These are people who pay no income tax. Forty-seven percent of Americans pay no income tax. So our message of low taxes doesn’t connect. So he’ll be out there talking about tax cuts for the rich. I mean that’s what they sell every four years. And so my job is not to worry about those people. I’ll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives. What I have to convince the five to ten percent in the center that are independents that are thoughtful, that look at voting one way or the other depending upon in some cases emotion, whether they like the guy or not.”

Mitt was right – Around 47% of the eligible tax filers pay no federal income taxes and the rest of the federal income tax burden fall on the other 53% of eligible tax filers (These numbers are undisputed and can be verified here).  If someone told you that the ideal way to run a country was to tax roughly half the population and give that money to the other half you’d call them an idiot (or a Socialist) but that is exactly the situation we have in the US right now!

I’ve shown here where over 90% of all federal income tax revenues are equal to the outlays of Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Welfare, Food Stamps and Unemployment Insurance.    These programs started out as safety nets (a noble cause that I continue to support) but they have quickly ballooned to consume almost every income tax dollar the US takes in.  Having almost all the country’s federal income tax dollars going to pay for entitlement programs is silly and explains why we have to borrow over a trillion dollars each year to take care of our normal constitutional responsibilities.  That is no way to run a country.

Leftists like to say the wealthy aren’t paying their “fair share” (although they never define that term…) but we can see how wrong their argument is when we look at the 53% of the people who actually pay taxes and compare their share of overall income with their share of overall taxes.  In theory, a ‘fair share’ would mean that if a particular income demographic group makes X% of the total income then they should pay X% of the total income tax.

The graph below shows the relation between the total percentage of adjusted gross income (AGI) and total percentage of overall federal income tax for the various income demographic groups.  For example, individuals that accounted for just 25% of the total AGI (those making over $200,000 per year) paid 50% of the overall federal tax revenues.  A full analysis of this topic can be found here.

There are basically two ways to help those in the lower income groups provide a better life for themselves and this Election showcases these two radical philosophies in a way we haven’t seen since 1980.

Obama’s plan requires the 53% (which includes the middle class) to pay more taxes so that the government can funnel more money to the 47%.  This is the classic Leftist redistribution of wealth scheme (that Obama endorses) and a quick look at Welfare spending vs. Poverty rate in the US proves this philosophy doesn’t work (Welfare spending as percent of GDP is on the right Y-axis and Poverty Rate is on the left Y-axis).

Romney’s method is to return to smaller government, promote pro-business policies (like reducing the corporate income tax rate to keep jobs in the US) and support a Free Market that encourages entrepreneurship (which also creates jobs).  The more people we have working will translate into more people paying local, state and federal income taxes and this added revenue can be used to build bridges/roads, provide for our defense, reduce our debt, balance our budget and ensure we have safety net programs to help our less fortunate.  Not to mention the intangible benefits of having a larger percentage of our population engaged in a profession that lifts their self esteem and provides a positive example to our children.

Romney has no chance to win the votes for most in the 47% by November and he is right to not focus on those people right now.  He needs to shore up his base and convince those in the middle (who are in the 53% group that pay income taxes) that his agenda, and not Obama’s, will get our country back on sound economic and fiscal footing.

The majority of the 47% will not support Romney in November but after 4 years of showing them that their lives are better off under a leader that follows conservative economic and fiscal policies, he’ll then win their support in 2016.  The support of the 47% won’t be won by rhetoric but by actually lifting people out of their current state of government dependence.

It is my belief that a vast majority of the 47% would rather have a profession than government assistance and providing that to them is the most humane way to help our poor and less fortunate.

Dive Deeper Into The Polls

The poll numbers are coming fast and furious now and this will not let up until November 7th so I caution everyone to look a little deeper than the poll headlines before they come to any conclusions.

I use Real Clear Politics to serve as a clearing house of the major polls and you can click on the individual poll to gain further details such as the questions asked, the sample size, margin of error and (this is important!!!) party affiliation of the people polled.

I will use a recent poll from Democracy Corps as an example how you must dive into the details before you glean too much from the overall polling numbers.

From this poll, we see that Obama has a 5 percentage point advantage over Romney with 1,000 likely voters (50% to 45%).  The main question posed was:

“Thinking about the presidential election in November, if the election for president were held today and the candidates were Democrat Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney, for whom would you vote?”

Wow, this looks pretty bad for Romney!  But when we look at the party affiliation of the 1,000 people sampled we see a large bias to Democratic voters.  The results below are to the following question:

“Generally speaking, do you think of yourself as a Democrat, a Republican or what?”

Strong Democrats outnumbered strong Republicans (30% to 21%), weak Democrats outnumbered weak Republicans (11% to 9%) and Independents leaning Republican outnumbered Independents leaning Democratic (13% to 9%).  Overall, those affiliated with the Democratic Party outnumbered those affiliated with the Republican Party 50% to 43%.  That is a 7 percentage point delta in a poll that suggests Obama has a 5 percentage point lead over Romney and this poll has a 3.1% margin of error.

What if the poll were able to sample equal number of people who were affiliated/leaning Democrat versus Republican?  For fun, let’s assume that those who categorized themselves as Strong, Weak or Leaning to a party would vote for the Presidential candidate of that party.  If we were to theorize that the Democracy Corps polling sample had equal percentages of Strong/Weak/Leaning party affiliation then we would see that Romney would lead Obama by 1 percentage point.

The calculations can be seen in the table below where I redistributed the 9% delta in Strong Dem, 2% delta in Weak Dem and 4% delta in Independent Leaning Republican equally amongst the parties.

But even leveling the party affiliations is still a poor representation of how people will actually vote.  The following data from Rasmussen show that the advantage of those affiliated with the Republican Party surpasses those affiliated with the Democratic Party anywhere from 0.9 to 4.3 percentage points in 2012.

August 31, 2012
Republican Democrat Other R – D Quarterly
2012
Aug 37.6% 33.3% 29.2% 4.3%
Jul 34.9% 34.0% 31.1% 0.9%
Jun 35.4% 34.0% 30.5% 1.4% 1.8%
May 35.7% 33.8% 30.5% 1.9%
Apr 35.1% 33.1% 31.8% 2.0%
Mar 36.4% 33.4% 30.2% 3.0% 3.3%
Feb 36.0% 32.4% 31.6% 3.6%
Jan 35.9% 32.5% 31.6% 3.4%

So keep in mind that any polling data that is either skewed to the Democratic side or has equal amounts of Democrats and Republicans is biased and doesn’t reflect voting reality.  As the polling data is released and the Leftists start thumping their chests, bring them back to Earth by diving deeper into the data.

A Tale of Two Journalists

After the murder of 4 American citizens in Libya, the Main Stream Media (MSM) has been more concerned with Romney gaffes and an anti-Islam movie (that hardly anybody has actually seen) than the breakdown in our intelligence system.  I offer two news stories to prove this point.

Imagine the hours it took NPR journalists Amy Morgan and Scott Neuman to write this piece on the movie that the MSM would like you to think inspired the attacks on US embassies.

“The past 24 hours have produced a few answers — but many more questions — about the anti-Islam film that became a flashpoint across North Africa and the Middle East this week.”

NPR’s Carrie Kahn reports on Morning Edition that The Innocence of Muslims was shot in Los Angeles County last August, under the title Desert Warriors. It’s full of “choppy dialogue, bad acting and scenes of a buffoonish Muhammad,” she says.”

Read the entire article.  They tracked down the location and date the movie was shot.  They identified the Director as well as his detailed criminal past.  They identified traced phone calls and uncovered the Director’s fake name, real name and religious denomination.  They interviewed someone who knows the Producer but won’t give out his name.  They even tracked down an actress in the movie and were able to determine that the film had a crew of 80 people.

From that article, I have no doubt these two have journalist instincts and training to obtain these kinds of details but wouldn’t it have been better to use that talent to get to the bottom of the actual events that led to the murder of 4 US citizens?

Kim Sengupta from the UK paper The Independent probably asked that same question and came up with this fantastic bit of investigative journalism.

“The killings of the US ambassador to Libya and three of his staff were likely to have been the result of a serious and continuing security breach, The Independent can reveal.”

“American officials believe the attack was planned, but Chris Stevens had been back in the country only a short while and the details of his visit to Benghazi, where he and his staff died, were meant to be confidential.”

“According to senior diplomatic sources, the US State Department had credible information 48 hours before mobs charged the consulate in Benghazi, and the embassy in Cairo, that American missions may be targeted, but no warnings were given for diplomats to go on high alert and “lockdown”, under which movement is severely restricted.”

Can you tell the difference between the way Sengupta used journalistic tools to obtain information that was pertinent to the crisis and how Morgan and Neuman used their talents to dive into minutia?

Americans deserve better from the 4th Estate and the lack of professionalism from journalists during not only the past 48 hours but the last 3+ years of the Obama regime is criminal.

Why Would You Vote For This Guy?

I was watching Obama’s campaign rally in Las Vegas tonight and I saw it opened up with the crowd chanting “Four more years!”  After seeing that, the first thought to enter my mind was “How in the hell could non-mentally-challenged adults chant that after the events of the last 24 hours (not to mention the past 3+ years)?

Allow me to hit the obvious points against voting for Obama and these are listed in no particular order.

Obama’s 2009 Stimulus failed at its basic objective to keep the official unemployment rate below 8% (it’s been over that rate for 42 consecutive months).

The Labor Force Participation rate is at a pitiful 63.7% which is the lowest level in 31 years.

Obama’s Keynesian economic policies have generated anemic GDP growth which is historically counter to expectations coming out of a deep recession.

The Chicago Teachers Union is on strike because they couldn’t accept a 16% raise over 4 years even though they are some of the highest paid teachers in the nation.  Obama has yet to comment on this issue that has caused the third largest city in the country to force 350,000 children to suffer even more under an already pitiful public education system.  Maybe it’s because the CTU is at odds with the Mayor who is Obama’s former Chief of Staff.

Obama showed how anti-business he is by stating that small businesses didn’t build their wealth on their own.

Obama’s only plan to address our debt problems is to raise taxes on the wealthy but anyone who has a 5th grade level competency in Math can show that this won’t work.

Obama has no plans to reform the Welfare programs that have expanded to the point where they have transitioned from a ‘safety net’ to an enabling program that keeps poverty rates pegged at about 11%.

Obama’s signature piece of Legislation, Obamacare, is already projected to cost more than advertised and is killing entrepreneurship, innovation, jobs and patients.  If the law is fully implemented starting in 2013-2014 timeframe we need look no further than Canada and England to see what evils await us.

Social Security is on a destructive path that will become unsustainable and Obama has offered no solutions.

Obama and the Democrat controlled Senate have not passed a federal budget since April 29, 2009.  Obama’s 2012 Budget received ZERO votes in both the House and Senate.

Under the first term of Obama, our national debt has increased by $5 trillion (more than all 8 years under Bush 43).  Our Debt to GDP ratio is now over 100% for the first time since WWII and we have Leftists to blame for this and specifically Obama.

Instead of bringing the country together, Obama chose to divide us and generate a fictitious income inequality meme that tells us that the wealthy aren’t paying their fair share.  This income inequality meme is not true and the wealthy are definitely paying their fair share when you look at actual IRS data.

And finally, over the past 48 hours we’ve seen how utterly incapable Obama is with regard to foreign policy.  The American embassies in Egypt and Libya were attacked and four US citizens, including the US ambassador to Libya, were killed in one of these attacks.  The US Egyptian embassy tweeted their outrage at an American movie maker who produced a movie (that hardly anyone has seen) that angered Muslims and then deleted those tweets.  Obama showed his support for the fallen Americans by flying to Las Vegas for a campaign rally that I mentioned in the opening paragraph of this post and after that rally, Obama compared his campaign staff to the Americans who were killed in Libya.  Earlier that day, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff found time in his busy schedule to contact a pastor in Florida in an attempt to convince him to give up his 1st amendment rights in publicizing the movie so he doesn’t upset our terrorist enemies.

After looking at all that has happened during Obama’s 1st term as US President, it is hard to understand how people in America want “4 more years” of this crap.  January 21st, 2013 can’t get here soon enough.

Global Temperature and CO2 Update – September 2012

The Anthropogenic Global Warming (AGW) cult is frustrated that they haven’t been able to convince enough people in the United States to believe their thesis that humans (with their lust for fossil fuels) are altering Earth’s climate and that if we don’t stop we’ll die from either rising oceans, drought, heat, snowstorms, hurricanes, earthquakes and ocean acidification.  They’ve tried Global Cooling, Global Warming, Climate Change and now they think they’ve found the right verbiage to hook enough suckers to try their Kool-Aid.  This NPR article states that many AGW clerics want to frame the issue as a human health issue.

“That’s because emerging science shows that people respond more favorably to warnings about climate change when it’s portrayed as a health issue rather than as an environmental problem.”

“In the past few years, social scientists have been exploring this issue. Matthew Nisbet, an associate professor in the School of Communication at American University, and colleagues have found that people who are indifferent, or even hostile, to climate change are more receptive to the issue when it’s talked about as a health issue.”

“He thinks these findings could define common ground, on an issue that has become deeply politicized and polarized. “The idea of protecting people, the innocent especially, from harm, and caring for the innocent, is a value that’s widely held across the political spectrum,” he says.”

Well, good luck with that but for those people who are more interested in data instead of ginned up propaganda, here is my recent update on the Global temperatures and atmospheric CO2 levels.

Here is the graph of atmospheric CO2 measurements as gathered by the Mauna Loa observatory and you can see that the CO2 levels are continuing to increase.

Here are the plots of global temperature averages compiled by the Climate Research Unit and the University of Alabama Huntsville.

Let’s now look at these same temperature graphs but starting with 1998 and you can easily see that we are still in a period of flat temperature growth (I’ve added trend lines with the equation for extra emphasis).

Furthermore, if increasing atmospheric concentrations of CO2 cause increased global temperatures then we should see a linearly increasing line when we plot global temperature anomaly (delta from a baseline period) on the Y-axis and atmospheric CO2 concentration on the X-axis. You can see that something happened around the 370 ppm point to stop that trend and this points to some other variable(s) swamping out any warming caused by CO2.

You can choose to believe the emotionally charge rhetoric of the AGW cult or you can choose to believe the data.  Let’s hope the American people and those we elect continue to side with the data.

Addendum – I have many posts on Climate Change that can be found here and if you are interested in a deeper dive of the science then I suggest two posts here and here.

How Democrats Treat Their Unions

You might want to get a bowl of popcorn before you read this.

The Chicago Teacher’s Union is in a bitter fight with the Mayor Rahm Emanual (former Obama Chief of Staff) and they are ready to walk off the job Monday.

“Twenty-five thousand Chicago teachers are planning to walk off the job Monday if they don’t have a contract by midnight Sunday. As the Democrats look to unions to help them get out the vote, a strike by Chicago teachers might just put a crimp in those plans.”

What exactly is the reason for the Teacher’s Union strike?

“In the contract battle between Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the Chicago Teachers Union, the two sides are furiously campaigning for public opinion as the city braces for the first teacher strike since 1987.”

“Emanuel is pushing for big changes: a longer school day and year, a new system for evaluating teachers and a whole new way to pay teachers. At the Democratic National Convention last week, he defended many of his reforms.”

“For the first time in a decade, [students are] getting a very rigorous academic standard,” he said. “For the first time, we’re getting five new high schools all dedicated to science, technology, engineering and math. Six thousand more kids are going to magnet schools. We’re making major changes.”

I don’t say this often, but on the surface, I don’t have a problem with what Mr. Emanuel is proposing but in predictable fashion, the Teacher’s Union trots out their typical arguments that have only self serving motives for their union members and ignore the needs of the children.

“They want smaller class sizes, more art and music, and job protection when the district shuts down low-performing schools and opens privately run charter schools, which are not typically unionized.”

Why should teachers be exempt from competition and the Free Market?  They want job protection when the students are performing so poorly that the district shuts down the school or when parents pull their kids out of underperforming schools and send them to privately run charter schools.  Who do they think they are?  General Motors?  The government can only rescue so many failing industries!

We should all take note of this conflict because it provides a glimpse into the consequences of following Leftist policies.  In a city/state that is one of the most Liberal in the US, we see what happens when the idealistic notions of Leftists run up against the harsh reality of Math.  Even Mr. Emanual has come to grips with the fact that there isn’t enough tax payer money to ensure inefficiencies in every industry.

The Teacher’s Union aren’t going to win this battle because Mr. Emanual can’t be bothered with these mundane complaints since he is the Co-Chair of Obama’s reelection campaign and he is now more concerned with shaking down Liberal donors for Obama’s Super Pac.

“Now that Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is in charge of raising really big dollars for a superPAC that supports President Obama, wealthy Democrats all over the country may be eyeing their phones nervously.”

“Sources in Democratic fundraising circles tell NPR that Emanuel needs to reach out to the top echelon of liberal donors and persuade them to write checks — not for $1 million, but for $10 million to $20 million. They say that’s the only way to build a war chest for multimillion-dollar TV campaigns.”

“Emanuel is also soliciting for the two Democratic superPACs from Capitol Hill, House Majority PAC and, on the Senate side, Majority PAC.”

And here is the final bit of irony that should cause all Union members to realize they are just useful idiots of the Democratic Party.  Again, from the NPR article:

“Steven Ashby, a labor professor at the University of Illinois, says a strike in Chicago could present problems for President Obama’s re-election.”

“He will win Illinois delegates in the November election, but nevertheless, the last thing he wants is the Republican Party talking about how teachers are on strike in Chicago,” West says.”

“It’s also a big gamble for the union. Ashby says the outcome in Chicago could affect the future of organized labor at a time when membership is down and public sector unions are struggling.”

If Unions can’t find a welcome ear to their ‘struggles’ from a Far Left Mayor of Chicago, then they are indeed lost.  To which I say – Good Riddance!  They have no one to blame but themselves.

It’s sad enough that Chicago is quickly becoming the murder capital of the US, but now its children are being used as pawns by the Union to get job protection for their workers who should be fired.  I’m making light of the fact that Unions pledge unwavering support to Democrats only to find that they are the first on the chopping block when push comes to shove but I don’t want to make light of the sad situation our children face in public schools all across the United States.  It’s time for the Teacher’s Union to show accountability and be held to a higher standard.

A Thought Experiment on Entitlement Programs

One of the topics during the 2012 Presidential election is entitlement spending and whether we need to reform these programs (Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Welfare, Food Stamps and Unemployment Insurance), keep them in their current state or expand them.  In this blog post I hope to show why reforming these programs and changing our philosophy about them is important and I’ll use a simple thought experiment to make my point.

But first let’s review a couple of things.

As I’ve stated before, this election comes down to two competing philosophies about the role of government and specifically, about the role of entitlement programs.

Conservatives believe that lowering our corporate income tax rate (which is the highest in the world) and lowering the taxes on the 53% of eligible taxpayers who actually pay Federal income taxes will stimulate the economy and get people back to work.  Removing the business killing over regulation and the sword of Damocles (Obamacare) that is hanging over business, forcing layoffs and hindering growth will enable the economy to expand and allow people to get back to work.  It is basic economics and a demonstration of the Laffer Curve – More people working will raise more tax revenues for roads, bridges, entitlement programs, etc.   Eventually we will run out of tax payers who can fund the government outlays (see Greece) and America will eventually either embrace individual responsibility or slip off the slope and go the way of European socialism.  It is Conservatives’ belief that it is more humane to get people off Welfare, get them a career and let them plan for their future than shackle them into a lifetime of government dependence.

Welfare has not changed the poverty rate and similar out of control entitlement programs that once were viewed as safety nets have changed into systems that enable poverty and government dependence for tens of millions of American citizens.

Here are a couple of graphs that prove those points regarding Welfare.

Now here is my thought experiment:

Suppose you are given a magic wand that can do one of two things.

1)      You can magically raise taxes on corporations and individuals to increase the money available for Welfare (which is currently around $700 billion) and the rest of the entitlement programs  (which amounts to over 90% of all federal income tax revenues) and ensure that there is always plenty of money available for these entitlement programs to keep more people dependent on government assistance.

2)      You can magically change the economic landscape that results in businesses growing to the point where they need to hire, which will cause a vast majority of people currently on Welfare, Food Stamps and Unemployment Insurance to obtain good jobs.

Which would you choose?

I think most people would choose option #2 because that would allow people to have the freedom to make their own decisions with regard to what they purchase, how they invest in stocks/bonds, how they pay for their children’s’ education and how they plan for their retirements.  This option would also increase the overall tax revenues because more people would be paying federal income taxes and less people would be receiving money from the US government in the form of Unemployment Insurance, Food Stamps and Welfare.  A nation where a vast majority of adult population is fully employed would cause a budget surplus, allow the federal government to pay down its debt (which is currently over $16 trillion) and put America back on a path that provides a better future for our children.

Team Obama and other Leftists clearly choose option #1 but Romney and Conservatives have plans that more closely resemble option #2.  My question to the American people is simply this – Why would you vote for someone whose policies will favor government dependence over individual freedom?

Who Was The 44th US President?

The Democratic National Convention starts this week and a recent NPR story gave us a sneak peek about what the major themes will be.   A few quotes from the NPR article are pasted below with emphasis mine.

Unlike what Republicans did in Tampa last week, Democrats will lay out a clear plan to get the country back on sound footing, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said during news briefing in Charlotte, N.C., moments ago.”

We are proud of our president and we are proud of what he’s accomplished,” she [DNC Secretary Alice Germond] said. Taking a dig at what she said was the secrecy of the GOP platform, she said that by the time President Obama delivers his acceptance speech Thursday evening, everyone will have a copy of the platform.”

We’ve made progress,” [Obama campaign’s national press secretary Ben] LaBolt said. And the president will use his speech on Thursday to lay out his plans to continue on that path.”

So here are the dual themes of the DNC convention – 1) Try and persuade the American public that Obama hasn’t been President over the past 3+ years and 2) Try and persuade the American public that we are on the right path thanks to Obama.

If Villaraigosa is saying the country isn’t on “sound footing” then he hopes that the American people will forget that Obama has led the country for almost 4 years and that his policies weren’t allowed to be passed, even though the first 2 years of his presidency enjoyed majorities in the House of Representatives and the Senate.  Obama said in 2009 that if the economy hadn’t recovered in 3 years then he deserves to be a 1 term President and the DNC will do everything they can to wipe the memory of the last 3 years from American voters’ minds.  Leftists are great at shifting goal posts but they’ll have the challenge of their life if they hope to convince the American people that Obama didn’t promise an economic recovery in his first term.

Then, if some people can’t purge that memory from their minds, they hope to convince people that we are on the right path and should re-elect Obama.  Our national Debt is greater than our GDP, our national credit rating was downgraded, US corporations pay the highest tax rate in the world, the Unemployment rate (U-3) is over 8%, the real unemployment rate (U-6) is at 15%,gas prices are higher than 3 years ago and Team Obama has no plans to address out of control entitlements like Social Security and Welfare.  That is not what I consider ‘being on the right path’ but the DNC will do their best to make that case.

They must really think the American people are stupid and I’ll assume that most thinking individuals will see through the attempts of the DNC to tell America we are on the right path.  But what about the DNC goal to paint Obama as an innocent bystander and that he is not culpable in the current economic situation?

Who pushed for and got the Stimulus of 2009 passed?  Obama promoted this bill as the savior of our economy and was supposed to keep the nation’s Unemployment rate below 8% but, as we all know, it didn’t work.  Whose fault was that?  Oh, that’s right.  Obama was confused about the definition of ‘shovel ready’ so we should totally forgive him for that $787 billion mistake.

Who pushed for and got Obamacare passed?  Is it Bush’s fault that the threat of Obamacare is already killing jobs, entrepreneurship and innovation because of this sword of Damocles hanging over our heads?  I shudder to think what will happen when it is fully implemented but we don’t have to imagine what will happen because all we have to do is look at other countries that have passed similar healthcare legislation.  We have plenty of evidence here and here that Obamacare will lower the quality of healthcare of our nation.

Who is the president that hasn’t passed a budget 3 years?  Are we to think that 4 more years of Obama will yield fiscally sound policies when he doesn’t have to worry about re-election?

Who was the president that presided over a ballooning over regulation environment as evidenced from the DoJ, FDA and HHS?  Regulations are not only killing businesses but actually killing Americans and this increased regulatory environment came as a direct result of Obama’s direction.

Who said the Private Sector is doing fine when in fact it isn’t?  Is it Bush’s fault that Obama is so out of touch with basic economics and small businesses?

Try as they may, the DNC can’t erase the destructive policies that have been enacted by Obama and I have faith in the American people to see through their lies.

In closing, there is one quote from the NPR article that I not only agree with but I hope comes to fruition.

Villaraigosa, who is the chair of the Democratic National Convention, said that by the time the convention wraps up Thursday night, the party will have crystalized its platform and explained that this election is about a stark choice.”

Yes, the 2012 Presidential election is about a choice between two very different philosophies and I hope the American people understand fully the differences.  The future of our Republic and our children hang in the balance.

The Value of a Part Time Job (part 3)

This is the 3rd and final post in a weekend series where I am celebrating the Labor Day holiday by reminiscing about what I learned from my first part time job at Wal-Mart that I held beginning halfway through my sophomore year in High School and continuing through the end of my sophomore year in College.

The 1st and 2nd parts of the series can be found here and here.

I learned Fiscal Responsibility

My parents were not wealthy and they couldn’t buy me a car when I turned 16 so it was up to me to make the car payments.  My parents paid for the insurance and signed for the loan but they made it very clear to me that I was responsible for the monthly car payments.  So now I had to make a budget which consisted of fast food, gas, beer, cigarettes and other incidentals (yes, I was not perfect when I was in high school) and I had to make sure I had enough left over to pay the bank.  I learned how to balance a check book, reconcile a bank statement and fill out my income tax form.  Yes, my dad made me fill out my own 1040EZ form (with guidance of course) and I have filled out my own taxes ever since.

How many young adults graduate from college and enter the work force without these basic skills?  It’s a shame.

I learned that Welfare spending is huge

After a year or so working on the sales floor I noticed that the first week in every month was much busier than the other weeks.  I couldn’t figure this out and one day I asked a co-worker why this was.  Her response was – “It’s mother’s day.”  What do you mean?  Mother’s day is just once a year in May.  She then explained that welfare checks go out the first of the month and then mom is the most popular person in town because her kids (who were really adults) would then come see her so they could take her shopping.

And don’t get me wrong.  I saw, first hand, the truly poor who needed this safety net to survive and I’m not advocating eliminating this system but only saying that those who work in retail (especially discount retail stores) know how big Welfare is because they see it every month.  Welfare is on a path where it will quickly be unsustainable and we have to reform it.

I’ve explored the welfare system in a previous post and showed how welfare doesn’t reduce the poverty rate.  As a High School student, I had no idea how much of our government budget was represented by entitlement programs nor did I know how much they would increase 25 years later but my days at Wal-Mart gave me the first hints that we had a serious issue with programs such as Welfare moving away from their intended purpose of a safety net.

I learned about Capitalism

As I alluded to earlier, my dad told me to participate in the company stock purchase program as soon as I started work at Wal-Mart.  For those of you who follow the stock market and specifically Wal-Mart, you’ll know that Wal-Mart’s stock split twice during the time I worked there (1985-1989) and when I quit in the Fall of 1989, the stock that I sold paid for a some of my final two years of college.  Some of this windfall was due to timing since the period between 1982 and 1992 saw Wal-Mart stock appreciate about 600% but I had to make that investment before I could reap the benefits and the wisdom of my father was to thank there.

I learned the intangible skills required to work in business

In retail, the customer is always right so I had to bite my lip and take a servant attitude to make sure the customer left happy.  It made me mad when I knew someone walked out of the store with a new piece of merchandise that was obtained by lying (they didn’t purchase the defective merchandise at Wal-Mart or they were at fault in the original damaged merchandise) but when I complained to my managers, they did a good job of letting me to see the bigger picture.   The managers knew the customers were lying too but if the customers left the store feeling good about their experience, they’d come back next week and spend twice that amount of money on other merchandise.  And they were right.  A teenager doesn’t always take the time to step back and see the long term implications of your actions and I learned that skill during my time at Wal-Mart.

As a teenager, Wal-Mart placed a great deal of trust in me to handle money transactions, reconcile the register each night, sell guns, order merchandise, setup displays that would move product and be on the front lines in a selling environment.  I won’t lie, for a long time I struggled with the fact that mom and dad weren’t there to show me the ropes and make sure I did the right thing.  I went through a slow transition from believing that I wasn’t capable of handling complex, adult situations to basically running a department and making very real business decisions.  It was something like a basic training but on a mental level instead of a physical level where I had to be pushed out of my comfort zone and realize that my limitations weren’t real and that I could push much further.  Confidence in one’s self is intoxicating.

I grew, not only physically, but psychologically and the main reason I now have good people skills and emotional intelligence is a direct result of my experiences at Wal-Mart.  I went on to graduate with a Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Electrical Engineering but I consider the 4+ years I spent at Wal-Mart #431 in Paducah, KY as the period when I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Business/Life.

I’m a father and in a few years my kids will be turning 16 and I pray that I have the same courage and wisdom that my parents had to push my children into areas which provide the valuable life lessons that are learned from a part time job.

The Value of a Part Time Job (part 2)

This is the 2nd post in a weekend series where I am celebrating the Labor Day holiday by reminiscing about what I learned from my first part time job at Wal-Mart that I held beginning halfway through my sophomore year in High School and continuing through the end of my sophomore year in College.

The first part of the series can be found here.

I learned that there are evil people in the world

I discovered that a coworker of mine (who was also a friend) was stealing from the company by ringing up purchases for his friends at drastically reduced prices (i.e. a car stereo for $5.00, CD’s for a dollar, etc.) and then getting the merchandise later.  Being immature, I was conflicted about what to do about this.  I didn’t feel good about ratting out a friend but I also didn’t approve of stealing so I had to do something about it.  I chose the ‘see no evil’ route which I know was the cowardly approach but then again, I was a teenager so….

I confronted the associate, told him he should not do this when I was around and told him I didn’t want to hear any more about this or I’d be forced to report it.  I thought that would wash my hands of the issue and I hoped that would guilt him into stopping this but, as you might expect, it didn’t work.  I soon found out from another friend/associate that he was made aware of the theft too and he asked me if I was also aware of it.  I said yes and since this guy had more maturity than I at the time, he suggested we go to management with this and that is what we did.

What ensued was a kangaroo court that consisted of a corporate loss prevention representative flying in to interview all parties late one night after the store closed.  After interviewing all of us, he decided to not only terminate the person who was stealing but also me and the other individual who came forward.  Yes, you read that right!  I got fired because I didn’t let management know of the theft immediately after I found out about it.

You would expect a company to give letters of commendation to employees who expose illegal activity and I was stunned and dreaded walking into the house and telling my parents that I got fired.  In hindsight now, I admit that I should’ve come forward sooner.  That was the first time in my life where I was confronted with a friend committing a serious crime and that conflicting situation caused me to take the coward way out.  Trust me, I learned from this mistake.

The story does have a happy ending though.  A few days after I was ‘fired’, the store manager called me at home and informed me that he had gone over the loss prevention guy’s head and got both our jobs reinstated and I went back to work the next day.   I found out later that the store manager had pleaded with the corporate loss prevention guy to NOT fire me and the other person who came forward but it didn’t work.  The store manager told me that the loss prevention guy came in the store with a chip on his shoulder and didn’t care about the circumstances and he wanted to terminate everyone who knew about it.

There are evil people in the world and some of them are hard to spot and can even be your friends.  Evil people can also exist while hiding under the guise of those who are supposed to uphold justice.

I learned that Higher Education is important

My job afforded a high school/college student ample living wages and while I had to stay on a budget, for my age, I was living pretty well.  But then again, I had my parents to provide a roof over my head, food on the table and clothes to wear so my salary was mostly gravy to be spent on things I liked.  This whole ‘making a living’ thing seemed pretty easy.

That euphoria quickly faded once I learned that many of my co-workers were adults who were supporting families on similar wages that I was making and I couldn’t believe it.  I was doing well for myself on my salary but I didn’t have a house payment, grocery bills, utility bills and other things to worry about but I saw my fellow associates struggling to make ends meet on their salaries.

My parents had always drilled into my head that, although they didn’t have college degrees, I was going to graduate from college with at least a bachelor’s degree.  Even as an elementary school kid, I knew that once I graduated from High School, there was but one option – I was going to college.  I never questioned that parental direction but if I needed any external validation of that advice, I got it while working my part time job for 4+ years.

It’s not to say that people can’t be successful without a college education but the odds of this happening are very slim so why roll the dice?  Give yourself the best possible chance of success by obtaining a higher education whether that be trade schools, Associate degrees or the traditional 4-year college experience.

It is true what they say – Education is the tide that lifts all boats.

The Value of a Part Time Job (Part 1)

We’re in the middle of Labor Day weekend and Unions use this event to remind us that if it weren’t for them, we’d have to work this coming Monday.  But instead of dedicating another post providing evidence how Unions are destroying business, I am going to use this holiday to show how my part time work experience while in high school and college laid the foundation for my future professional success.

It was early in 1985, I was a sophomore in high school and I had a big week.  I started my first part-time job at a local Wal-Mart assembling bicycles and later in the week I was going to try out for the school baseball team.  At the time, this week didn’t seem like a point in time that I would point to 25 years later as a major turning point in my life but as you will soon see, it most definitely was.

Baseball was my sport.  I loved to play it, I collected baseball cards, I watch my beloved St. Louis Cardinals on TV any chance I could get and I knew that I’d always play it and maybe, if I was lucky, would get paid to play baseball one day.  As a pre-teen, my dad taught me how to keep official score of baseball games and not only did I do that while watching the games at home but I even got a part time job in middle school keeping the score and announcing batters for a local adult baseball league.  As fate would have it, I had some injuries in 8th grade that prevented me from trying out for the high school team my freshman year and I opted to play recreation league ball to rehab and thought I was ready my sophomore year to impress the coaches in a tryout and make the team.

But days prior to the tryout I applied for and got a job at a local Wal-Mart assembling bicycles in the stock room.  The first week was hard work since I really didn’t know what I was doing and it was slow going just reading the instructions, not to mention avoiding rats that were in the area.  I left work each night sweaty and pissed that my parents made me get a job and it didn’t help that I had not even received a pay check yet!  Driving home the night before the baseball tryouts, I made the decision that I could convince my parents to let me quit my job during baseball season because the demands of playing a high school sport would not allow me to hold a steady job.

So this was the decision point.  If I made the team, I’d quit work but if I didn’t make the team, I’d stick with Wal-Mart for a little while longer.

Based on the title of this blog, you probably have guessed that I didn’t make the team.  As a 16 year old whose worldview was severely limited, I was crushed but little did I know that this was one of the best things to ever happen to me.

After a few weeks of assembling bicycles, the store management noticed that I was setting records for number of bikes assembled per day and I was doing such a good job that I ran out of work (I was assembling them faster than new deliveries were coming in).  To my surprise, I got a call one day from a manager who told me I needed to wear a tie to work because I was being promoted to sales clerk in the sporting goods/automotive department!

I worked at that same position through high school and the first two years at a community college (once I transferred to an out-of-town 4-year college I had to quit) and I’d like to use the next three blog posts to tell you what I learned from that part time job.

I learned about taxes

I still recall in vivid detail my reaction to my check when I opened it up.  Being pretty good with math, I had calculated what my gross pay should have been and while I knew taxes would be taken out, I had no idea how much would be deducted.  Who was this Fica person?  Why did my dad insist that I have money deducted for employee stock purchase?  (More on that later)  The state takes my hard earned money too?  I didn’t understand debt to GDP ratios, entitlement programs or how much our government spends on an annual basis but I knew that I didn’t like having so much of my money siphoned off.

Unless you have a job or have had a job in the past, you really can’t comprehend this feeling and I fear that we are raising a generation that might never look at a paycheck and see how much money goes to the government because they are on the receiving end of the government handouts.

I learned that hard work pays off

Unless you worked in retail before the 24 hour stores came into existence, you probably didn’t realize that once the store closed, the associates stayed behind for at least an hour to straighten up the aisles and clean up the store.  This was the worst part of my job because after working all night and seeing the customers leave, the last thing you wanted to do was stick around and clean up on a Friday night when you knew your buddies were out partying.

It was early in my employment at Wal-Mart (less than a year) and one night, the store manager closed the store and for Wal-Mart, that was unusual because normally one of the assistant mangers closed up.  On that night there was an aisle display of panties that was a mess and on several occasions the store manager came over the intercom and asked for those who were finished in their areas to hit that table.  After I finished cleaning my area, I wondered to the panty display to see if it still needed help and after walking past several groups of people idling chatting, I saw the table was still a mess.  Sorting panties was not something a 16 year old thinks about unless they are being worn by some classmates but I heard the manager say he needed help so I dove in, so to speak.  The store manager came by, saw me working on the table and commented something to the effect “Well, if nobody else will do it, then you will eh?”  It’s odd that I can still recall that memory in such detail but you’ll understand why in a minute.

A week later, it was announced that there would be cost cutting measures and some people would be laid off.  We were told that when the next monthly schedule was posted in the break room, you should look for your name and if it wasn’t listed then you knew you were laid off.  Being a new hire, I went into work the day of the schedule posting thinking I wouldn’t be listed on the schedule but to my surprise, my name was on the schedule and a person who had worked there for 5 years in my same department was not.

Needless to say, that person was pissed and he even made the point to tell people in the break room that he was shocked that his name was gone but my name (he pointed to me) was there.

That evening the store manager got everyone together to explain why this lay off happened but he also explained the decision process they used to decide who stayed and who was terminated.  He used the example of the panties display and stated how most employees were only concerned with their areas and were unwilling to work in other areas that needed help.  He didn’t mention me by name but I knew that the little extra effort I port forth that fateful evening caused the management to keep me employed even though I had the lowest seniority.

Part 2 will be posted tomorrow.

Obama Attempts to Shift the Goalposts

President Obama made the following comments yesterday at the Iowa State campus (emphasis mine):

“And, frankly, some folks, they make it their political strategy to try to make you feel discouraged. They’ll tell you over and over again how bad everything is, and then, of course, they’ll add that it’s all Obama’s fault. (Laughter.) And they’ll tell you that if you believed in change four years ago, your faith was foolish and you were being naïve. Last week, my opponent’s campaign went so far as to write you off as a “lost generation” — that’s you according to them.”

“But you can’t believe it. I don’t believe it. We knew that solving our biggest problems were going to take more than one year, or one term, or even one President. But we went ahead and we got started. (Applause.) We know we’ve still got a lot of work to do to get to where we need to be. But we are going to get there. (Applause.)”

So according to Obama – The Unemployment rate is at 8.3%, our national Debt is greater than our GDP and the economy is limping along when it should be roaring back but all that is because Republicans have brainwashed people into thinking things are bad.   That is not only desperate but insulting to Americans who are struggling every day to fight against the headwinds that Leftist policies are generating and I have faith in the American people to see through this diversionary tactic in November.

From his comments above, it also appears that Obama had known all along that it was going to take more than one term to bring our country back.  Well that is a lie and I offer you two pieces of evidence that come directly from Obama.

Stimulus to the Rescue

Remember the Stimulus in 2009 that was supposedly needed to keep the Unemployment rate below 8%?  I do and according to Obama’s plan, Unemployment rate should be below 6% right now.  I guess he hopes American forget that big miss.

Here is the graph from Obama’s economic team’s report/recommendations:

Obama’s Timetable for Recovery

I remember Obama saying in 2009 that if he didn’t fix the economy after 3 years then he’d be a one term President.

“Look, I’m at the start of my administration. One nice thing about the situation I find myself in is that I will be held accountable. You know, I’ve got four years. A year from now I think people are going to see that we’re starting to make some progress. But there’s still going to be some pain out there. If I don’t have this done in three years, then there’s going to be a one-term proposition.”

Sorry Mr. President, the internet has a huge memory and we don’t need the Leftist media in order to gather ample evidence to refute your lies.  You don’t get to shift the goal posts during this election and we’ll use your own measuring sticks against you and make sure we hold you to your word that you deserve to be a one term President in the vein of Jimmy Carter.

An Elevator Pitch For Romney

The November elections are less than 3 months away, the party conventions are starting and soon the debates will be on TV so this is the time when those who only follow politics once a year will start to pay attention.  Conservatives must be ready to give our arguments for our candidate in a persuasive, concise manner and this post will help you do just that.

News/Political junkies who are active on blogs, Twitter, Facebook and the original social media (face-to-face water cooler conversations) already know who they’ll be voting for and have had dozens, if not hundreds, of conversations about the election over the past year.  As someone who has been interested in politics since I was in High School, it is hard for me to grasp the fact that there are people in 2012 who have no interest in the issues and challenges that face the United States during this election cycle but since I’ve been happily married to one of these individuals for almost 13 years, I have come to understand them and this is why I think I can help those who are confused about how to deliver our political message to these political novices.

Like it or not, a vast majority of Americans are like my wife.  They are immersed with jobs, family and a host of other activities that consume the hours of the day and since politics isn’t something they are interested in, they choose to spend their valuable and all too little idle time in other valuable pursuits.  This diversity is what makes America great but in the coming months, it is the duty of every Conservative to become a missionary of sorts and deliver the Conservative gospel to as many as we can in hopes that we can make an impact on November 6th.

Let’s face it, we will not be able to persuade a true independent voter with White Papers, graphs and links to awesome blog sites when we bump into them at the mall or at Starbucks.  We’ll need to be ready with a killer elevator pitch for our candidates and I’ll show you how to craft your own and I’ll share mine.

The Elevator Pitch

Most every person who has attempted to start a company knows what an elevator pitch is.  This is a powerful speech that you make to a potential investor that is short (less than a minute) and, not only grabs the attention of the target audience within the first 10 seconds, but delivers the main benefit of the business.  A successful elevator pitch will lead the potential investor to inquire about more information and then will result in an investment in the business.

There is a great website that gives tips on generating a winning elevator pitch and while this site is geared for business, it has value for us as we are attempting to craft a political elevator pitch for Mitt Romney as President.

Here is a great introduction from that site on what an elevator pitch is and is not.

“While you no doubt love, are fascinated by, and are passionate about what you are doing and could spend hours talking about it, most people aren’t like you.  In all likelihood, when it comes to the people whose help you will need to bring your Solution to life, they aren’t going to be nearly as knowledgeable about or as interested in it as you are. As a result, they are unlikely to appreciate — or even notice — the intricacies, subtleties, and details of it. Instead, they will only understand and — initially at least — be interested in the big picture.”

“One reason why so many people deliver completely ineffective elevator pitches is they don’t understand the purpose of an elevator pitch. They act like the purpose of an elevator pitch is to close the deal while in truth the purpose of an elevator pitch is to just interest the audience in continuing to talk.”

The website states that the elevator pitch has 11 components and all of them start with the letter “C” and are given below:

1. Concise

2. Clear

3. Compelling

4. Credible

5. Conceptual

6. Concrete

7. Customized

8. Consistent

9. Conversational

Remember, the elevator pitch is not meant to ‘close the deal’ but instead provide a ‘hook’ so the target audience desires to enter into a longer conversation about the topic, idea or business.

With that in mind, here is my elevator pitch for Mitt Romney.

The elections in November are, in many aspects, the most important elections in American history and they can be distilled down to a choice between two radically different philosophies.

Romney and Conservatives believe that individual liberty, as manifested in entrepreneurship and innovation, drives wealth creation and provides the best means for all of society to prosper and provide tax revenue for the Government to carry out its constitutional duty.  History has taught us that a small government approach allows the Free Market to generate wealth that is enjoyed by all socioeconomic groups and private sector innovation can be considered the rising tide that lifts all boats.

Obama and Liberals believe that a large government approach, from redistribution of wealth through higher income taxes, does a better job of generating wealth than the private sector and they believe that US citizens should be indebted to this benevolent big government.  Obama believes that the government exists to provide for every need of its citizens and the roughly 50% of citizens who pay our federal tax revenues should pay even higher taxes to fund the government entitlement programs that the other 50% now depend on.

That pitch should take about a minute and should grab the person’s attention to ask for more details.  At this point I’ll add another 30 seconds of follow-up that will further lay out the massive problems that our country faces and describe how Obama has contributed to our problems.

Obama’s tactics to redistribute wealth have not worked for the past 4 years and we can see that by the anemic recovery and Unemployment rates above 8%.  Obamacare is already killing businesses and will be worse once fully implemented.  Obama has divided America with his Class Warfare tactics and demonized small business owners and those who have been successful in starting businesses that hire people.  The US national debt is greater than our total output from all businesses and we are on the path that is similar to Greece because we’ll soon be in a position where we can’t pay our bills because we have discouraged innovation and business.  Over 90% of the US Federal income tax revenue goes to pay for entitlement programs such as Social Security, Welfare, Medicare, Medicaid and Unemployment benefits and if these entitlement programs are left unchanged, they will destroy America.

Only Romney and Ryan have real plans to address these all too serious issues by removing government regulation that kills business, repealing Obamacare, reforming entitlement programs and balancing our federal budget.

So that is my elevator pitch (plus follow-up) for Romney and I encourage other conservatives to generate their own and be prepared to deliver it on a moment’s notice.  This election is too important to sit on the sidelines and let the Leftist media control the narrative.  It is said that in the absence of information, people will make up their own perceptions so it is up to us to counter the lies of the Left.  Be prepared!

I welcome others to leave their own elevator pitches in the comments section because another important part of an elevator pitch is to keep it fresh and I hope to build on my elevator pitch with the additional conversations from those who read this blog.

ADDENDUM – The justification for my claims in the above elevator pitch can be found here, here and here.

New Romney Tactic

Today Mitt Romney made a joke about his birth certificate and it was damn funny!

“Now I love being home, in this place where Ann and I were raised, where both of us were born. Ann was born in Henry Ford Hospital, I was born in Harper Hospital. No one’s ever asked to see my birth certificate. They know that this is the place where both of us were born and raised.”

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past 4 years, you know this was a clever bit of rhetoric by our next President to poke fun at the narcissistic Obama who has been fighting claims from ‘birthers’ who say Obama wasn’t born in the US.  Of course Romney isn’t a ‘birther’ (and for the record, neither am I) and anyone who makes that claim shouldn’t be taken seriously but that didn’t stop the Leftist machine from overheating over this latest round of faux rage.

Was this recent comment by Romney a gaffe or a cool, calculated move on his part?  Only Team Romney knows but I think it was on purpose, I suggest he do more of it and here is why.

Team Obama is running on any fringe issue they can imagine to smear Romney/Ryan and they refuse to talk about real issues such as how they’ll 1) get the economy moving forward, 2) deal with the debt, 3) balance the budget, 4) develop an energy policy and 5) address out of control entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare.   As long as Team Obama acts like children and refuses to have the mature conversations that Romney and Ryan are having, then Team Romney should mocked and ridiculed them with jokes.

Let’s have……

More jokes about Romney’s past 5 years of tax returns – “Hey, I think Obama wants us to release my tax returns because then most of his supporters will get to see what one actually looks like.”  Or something like – “I’ll give you 1 tax return for every “D” Obama got on his college transcripts.”  Or Romney could have fun with Obama’s excessive golfing habit – “I challenge Obama to a round of golf and every stroke he beats me by, I’ll release another year’s worth of taxes.  He has more time to play golf than I do so he’ll have to spot me 10 strokes.”

More jokes about Debbie Wasserman-Schultz’s lies regarding Ryan’s plan to rescue Social Security and Medicare – “We just got back from Florida where we were pushing senior citizens off cliffs and boy, are our arms tired.”

More jokes about Team Obama’s faux claim that Republicans have a war on women – “I don’t have a war on women.  I’m a lover, not a fighter.  Just ask Michelle.”  Maybe that is a bit over the top so maybe something like – “If we are fighting a war on women then I’m losing because Ann runs our house.”  Or something like this idea I just got from @Rogue1776 – “If I have a war on women, then why does Ann go to bed with a smile on her face every night?”

More jokes about Obama and Elizabeth Warren suggesting that entrepreneurs didn’t build their businesses – “I brought these hammers to help all the struggling small business owners hang some drywall.”  Or better yet, Romney could bring “starting and running a business for dummies” books to his rally and pass them out and maybe even have them signed.

More jokes about Team Obama’s class warfare rhetoric which states the rich don’t pay their fair share.  Romney could have a large calculator and video screen set up at a rally and he could work through the simple math showing how doubling the taxes on those making over $200,000 per year still won’t cover our government’s spending for a single year.  He could have elementary school kids punching in the numbers and coming to this conclusion that Obama and the Leftists either can’t comprehend or refuse to admit.

I think you get my point.

Forgive my pitiful attempt at comedy writing above and while I’m no comedian, I suggest Romney hire one now and hit this theme of portraying Obama as someone who isn’t serious about the issues.  It is my belief, that in utilizing this tactic, he will show America that all of the Leftist memes have no real value and just amount to fodder for ridicule.

Upon repeated ridicule from Romney (and seeing it on the news every night), the Narcissist-in-Chief will implode and become even more unhinged than he is now.  And more importantly, I think the American people will resonate with this tactic and it will cause them to focus on the adult conversations about real issues that ONLY Romney/Ryan are having.

The Inconvenient Truth of Ice Melt

One of the Anthropogenic Global Warming (AGW) cult lies was revealed last month and yesterday we saw another one exposed.  From a recent NPR story we see that there is a new paper published in Nature that shows prior warming in the Antarctic Peninsula equivalent to what we see today.

“Ten years ago, a piece of ice the size of Rhode Island disintegrated and melted in the waters off Antarctica. Two other massive ice shelves along the Antarctic Peninsula had suffered similar fates a few years before. The events became poster children for the effects of global warming. But a new study finds that the story isn’t quite so simple.”

“There’s no question that unusually warm air triggered the final demise of these huge chunks of ice. But a lingering question is whether these events can be attributed to human-induced global warming.”

“To probe that question, Robert Mulvaney and colleagues at the British Antarctic Survey drilled down 364 meters (more than 1,000 feet) and collected an ice core that tells the story of heating and cooling along the Antarctic Peninsula over the past 50,000 years.”

“Mulvaney says the sharp warming trend we’re seeing now is quite unusual but not entirely unique.”

“In the last 2,000 years there was another period around about the 1500s where we also saw a warming about similar to the rate of today,” he says, but the temperature cooled again. “And then at about 400 A.D., we also saw not quite as great a warming there as well, but then it cooled again.”

Remember that the AGW cult has said that Antarctic Ice sheets falling off into the ocean was due to human caused global warming.

“The western chunk of Antarctica is losing 23 feet of its floating ice sheet each year. Until now, scientists weren’t exactly sure how it was happening and whether or how man-made global warming might be a factor. The answer, according to a study published Wednesday in the journal Nature, is that climate change plays an indirect role — but one that has larger repercussions than if Antarctic ice were merely melting from warmer air.”

“Hamish Pritchard, a glaciologist at the British Antarctic Survey, said research using an ice-gazing NASA satellite showed that warmer air alone couldn’t explain what was happening to Antarctica. A more detailed examination found a chain of events that explained the shrinking ice shelves.”

“Twenty ice shelves showed signs that they were melting from warm water below. Changes in wind currents pushed that relatively warmer water closer to and beneath the floating ice shelves. The wind change is likely caused by a combination of factors, including natural weather variation, the ozone hole and man-made greenhouse gases, Pritchard said in a phone interview.”

But this recent paper shows that similar Antarctic melting occurred over the past 2000 years so our ancestors must have been driving around in SUV’s when the Roman Empire fell and during the time when Europe was awaking from the Dark Ages.  How else could global temperatures have risen to the point where massive ice sheets were breaking off in Antarctica?

The Mulvaney paper isn’t the first global temperature reconstruction to show prior instances where Earth warmed to similar temperatures that we observe today.  In 2008, Loehle and McCulloch assembled a temperature reconstruction for the past 2,000 years for the northern hemisphere.

“Loehle and McCulloch (LM, submitted to Energy and Environment as a correction to Loehle 2007) construct a Global Temperature Reconstruction for 16AD – 1935 AD based on 18 peer-reviewed published non-treering proxy series.”

Here is the graph from their reconstruction showing annual temperature anomalies (The blue line shows the average of the data and the red lines show the 95% confidence intervals):

The high temperature anomalies between 900 and 1200 AD occurred during the medieval warming period when Vikings migrated to Greenland and cultivated farms in that area that is currently engulfed in ice and this period was followed by the Little Ice Age which we are still exiting.

So one must come to the conclusion that there must be forces driving the Earth’s climate other than the mighty CO2 molecules that comprise roughly 400 parts per million in our atmosphereMaybe it’s that large yellow orb in the sky.

Wisconsin Union Still Upset and Clueless

From a recent NPR story, it appears the Wisconsin Union supporters are still upset about that smack down Governor Walker laid on them back in June.

NPR’s Morning Edition is doing on the street reports from swing states and Monday’s installment happened in Oshkosh, Wisconsin where reporter David Greene spoke with a few Union supporters.  I’ll provide inline comments to quotes from this story below.

Just to my right was Paulette Feld, a university librarian in Oshkosh and president of the Wisconsin State Employees Union. Her big, welcoming smile seemed to be hiding something.

“Right now, I’m a little tired,” she says. “I think just because we’ve been through so many campaigns.”

Awww, she’s so tired because there have been so many campaigns.  Well listen idiot; you caused the last campaign with your stupid recall so you lost the right to complain about the number of election campaigns.  Your Union acted like a bunch of cry babies who didn’t get their way and wasted the time and money of an entire state for at least 1 full year.  Guess what?  Your actions have consequences.  Deal with it!

When Walker took away collective bargaining for state employees, this group said, they felt they lost most of their basic rights as workers.

Sorry, Collective bargaining is not a right and you can read about it here.  CB is also one of the worst forms of Crony Capitalism where the Union bosses fill the campaign coffers of politicians and in return the politicians rewards unions with sweetheart deals all at the expense of the taxpayers who don’t have a voice at the bargaining table.  That ill conceived and border-line illegal process is not a “right” for workers.

They’re ready to keep fighting. But maybe just a little break?

“I mean, I didn’t plant my garden this summer until the middle of June,” Feld says. “I look at it now [and] I’m like, ‘This is really pitiful.’ And that’s the way the past year has been, so … feeling this way is kind of different for me. But I think it’ll happen, and I’ll get involved and I’ll do what I have to do, like I always do.”

In addition to being tired, she says it’s now harder for union members to get involved in campaigns.

“We don’t have all the options to get involved as we had before. We could get off of work and do a little bit of campaigning for people in the past. We can’t do that anymore,” she says, “so I think that’s going to make a big difference.”

Oh too bad.  Work is so hard that you can’t have a huge garden or get approved time off from work to do the bidding of your Union bosses.  Tell this sob story to someone in the private sector who is suffering from the flawed economic policies of Team Obama and see if you get any tears from them.

Across the table from me was Patti Clark-Stojke, a speech pathologist in the public schools. She was involved in the very first demonstrations against Walker.

“I think back to the irony of how freezing cold my feet got that day, and now thinking how that feels like our life has been for the last year and a half — everything has been frozen, everything is cold and miserable,” she says. “And to find happiness and joy in what we do … the things that we love to do in education and teaching children and helping them reach their potential — it’s hard to do when you’re frozen.”

Apparently, for Ms. Clark-Stojke, her job is “cold and miserable” because her union bosses can’t shake down tax payers for huge contracts any more.  I guess it’s not enough to get joy from being paid for doing a noble job where you get to educate the next generation of Americans but it appears your joy came from the cushy union contracts and benefits that those in the private sector can only dream about.  Nobody forced you to become a teacher and if you joined that profession for the Union benefits alone then I have no sympathy for you.  Again Union stooge, tell it to someone who cares.

Joan Kaeding, the fourth member of our group, works at the reference desk at the Oshkosh Public Library. She was proudly wearing her button that says “Ask me about eBooks!”

Well, one thing people have been asking about is health care policy.

“It’s a very complicated plan,” she says. “People don’t understand it, haven’t read it, including myself. Yes, I am at the library, I have access to it, but you can offer to print it out, you can offer to let them look at it — it is a really overwhelming document for people to understand and know what’s in there.

“So more education needs to be done by the administration and all of us about what’s in that plan.”

Are you kidding me?  From her comments she obviously thinks Obamacare is good for the country because she believes the reason people are against Obamacare is because Team Obama hasn’t done a good enough job selling it!  For the first two years of Obama’s term we couldn’t go a week without Obama, Pelosi or Reid talking about how Obamacare was a “must have” for America and they pimped it from coast to coast before ramming it through Congress before even the Speaker of the House admitted to not fully reading the bill.

Ms. Kaeding works in a library and admits to not reading the Obamacare bill but yet she supports it.  Perhaps that is her problem because if she read the bill she would find out how Obamacare is already destroying businesses and she would see how the many lies of Obamacare are being revealed.   If she would use the library resources to read how similar socialized healthcare bills have failed in other countries (see here and here) then she’d know why we have to repeal and replace Obamacare.

The ultimate #Headdesk from these three ladies comes at the closing of the NPR story.

Now, the three women around the table with us at the New Moon Cafe said they will be voting for Obama in November.

Just goes to show you that you can’t fix stupid.  Typical Wisconsin Union…..

Akin is akin to Stupid

On Sunday, Rep. Todd Akin (who is competing against incumbent Senator Claire McCaskill), made the following comments about rape and abortion:

“First of all, from what I understand from doctors [pregnancy after rape] is really rare,” Akin told KTVI-TV in defense of his stand that rape victims should not be allowed to access abortions. “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”

“Akin said that even if a rape victim does somehow become pregnant, “I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist and not attacking the child.”

Within 24 hours after this comment the Left had re-energized their War on Women meme in an attempt to make American voters forget about the high unemployment, insane Debt to GDP ratio and the sword of Damocles hanging over our heads (aka Obama care).  With the lapdog media smelling blood in the water, you can be assured that Akin’s comments will last longer than the typical new cycle gaffe and Republicans will be forced to defend their stance on Abortion and answer questions why they hate women so much.

Before this incredibly ignorant comment, it should be noted that Akin was leading McCaskill in the latest poll by 11 points.  For Conservatives, taking the Senate back is just as important as a Romney victory over Obama because if the Senate road block imposed by Harry Reid remains in 2013, America has little to no hope of restoring our country back to fiscal responsibility and getting our economy humming again with Free Market principles.

Some Conservative pundits have rushed to Akin’s defense and stated that this was a gaffe and should be excused like we do with gaffes by Joe Biden and other Leftists.  While I’m not one to give in to Leftists, I do take pride in the fact that our side should hold our politicos to a higher standard and not give them a free pass when they do something stupid.  That is why I am joining Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown and others in calling for Akin to step down immediately so the Republican Party can put a replacement on the ballot.

I do not support the removal of Akin from the ballot because of Leftist outrage but instead due to the fact that someone making this stupid comment less than 3 months before one of the most important elections we’ve had in the US shows that he is not fit for service.  Is abortion and rape something that we should be debating right now?  No!  Akin is running for US Senate, not some local city council position, and he should understand the gravity of this year’s election and realize how important it is that he beat McCaskill.  If he can’t stay focused in an election that has such monumental consequences then how can we trust he’ll serve in Washington when the white hot glare of the election is over?  This was a rookie mistake and shows that he wasn’t the best candidate for the job.

But there is another aspect of Akin’s comments that forced me to take another look at my position on Abortion and the more I think about it, the more I believe that people who believe as Akin does – that a woman who becomes pregnant from a rape should be forced to carry the baby to term – are out of touch with reality.

True, Akin has apologized for his stupid remarks but this was such a heinous gaffe that an apology won’t cut it and ,from what I can read, he is only apologizing for using the term “legitimate rape” and still believes that someone who becomes pregnant from a rape should carry the baby to term.

Full disclosure here – I am Pro Life but have always believed that exceptions should be made in the case where a baby threatens the life of the mother and when a woman becomes pregnant as a result of rape.  My opinions have not changed but have only been further reinforced with Akin’s comments.

Many readers will notice an inconsistency with my logic here and I fully admit to it.  How can I say that abortion is murder in one case but not in the other?

I do believe that terminating a pregnancy is a euphemism for murder at any point past the attachment of the embryo to the uterus.  Abortion is equal to killing a baby in my book, plain and simple, but like all complex issues, there are shades of gray and I’m comfortable exploring them.

If a baby has a high probability of taking the life of the mother then an abortion is justified in my mind just like I would kill someone who was trying to kill my wife.  Killing a baby in the womb to save the mother is a heart wrenching decision that some parents must face and I can’t imagine that thought process or conversations that occur when a man and a women are presented with this dreadful scenario.  I can’t say for certain what I would’ve done if my wife and I were faced with that decision but I believe that we’d make the decision to end the life of the baby versus ending the life of my wife.  I married my wife and joined in a relationship/covenant with her before God that states, among other things, that we are joined for eternity and in my mind, my wife is the most important person in the world for me and that means she has a higher place than even my kids.  If there is ever a decision to save the life of another versus my wife, I will choose my wife 100% of the time.

But what about when a woman is raped and becomes pregnant?  It is conceivable that a woman’s life would not be threatened from a pregnancy that came about from a rape.  In this scenario I derive my beliefs based on the counsel of my wife and from the fact that I have a daughter.

I have mentioned many times to my Conservative brothers that in matters that involve a women’s body, we should have long, meaningful conversations about these topics with our girl friends or wives and use those conversations to base our opinions.  The conversations I had with my wife added great value to my position on allowing a woman to abort her child in the case of rape and it should be noted that my wife is Pro Choice, and while we disagree on the general evils of abortion, we agree that abortion should be legal for instances where the life of the mother is threatened and in the case of rape.

I have a daughter and if, God forbid, she was raped as a teenager, I could not imagine a situation where I would force her to carry that baby to full term.  If her decision, in concert with my wife’s, were to abort the baby, then I’d be the one to drive her to the clinic and be with her every step of the way.  I would fully support her decision to kill the baby that was conceived in such an evil manner.

In many respects, aborting a baby after a rape could be considered, like in the case where the baby threatens the mother’s life, justifiable homicide because the life of the mother might be in danger for those 9 months she has to carry it.  Rape is an unimaginable evil brought on women by sick men and forcing the woman (or a teenage girl) to carry the baby to term might cause irreparable harm to her life.  It might not be death but it might mean living every day in Hell and that is worse than death.  Yes, abortion in this case would be equivalent to murder of an unborn baby but let me ask the fathers of daughters this question.

Can any father really say he would prefer to see his daughter suffer for not only 9 months but the rest of her life just so he can say that he is consistent with his Pro Life stance?

As a father of a daughter, I cannot.

They Grow Up Too Fast

When my first child was about 3 months old I attended the wedding of my sister-in-law and during the reception my father-in-law walked over to my table and told me that the time between this (he pointed at my baby daughter) and that (he pointed at his daughter who just got married) goes by like this (he snapped his fingers).  At the time, I thought he was full of it and he was just repeating the trite expressions that older people say to younger people.  I was sooooo wrong because today I took a picture of this:

Today we bought our daughter her first cell phone and in 4 days she will start Middle School and while this is a great milestone that my wife and I enjoyed, we were more sad than we expected.

It was 7 years ago when we made the following video where we surprised our daughter with a trip to Disney World and it truly seems like yesterday when we did this.  Now she is growing into a young lady and texting her friends on her new phone!  Damn!

Although I struggled with those days of diapers, bottles, daycare and feeling like a band roadie carrying all the paraphernalia required for toddlers when we travelled, in some respects it was easier in those days.  If we wanted to protect her, we placed her in a secure location and she didn’t move.  We decided who she played with, we decided what she ate/drank, we decided how she spent her free time and we controlled almost all aspects of her life to ensure she was safe.

But in just a few years from now we won’t be able to control her or protect her all the time.  Soon, she’ll be driving, going on dates and be faced with decisions about drugs and alcohol.  She’ll be growing into an adult and must learn the responsibility/accountability that comes with independence the same way I did and that means learning from her mistakes.  She will have to deal with peer pressure and learn that mom and dad won’t always be there to protect her so she must understand that her actions have consequences.

How will I muster the courage to face these challenges?  Fortunately, there is a coping mechanism that has been built in to our aging process that will help.

From my brief 11 years as a parent, I’ve learned that parenting is akin to obtaining calluses on your hands and feet.  From frequent use, our hands and feet become toughened and can withstand the rigor of such tasks as working with tools and walking barefoot outdoors.  These calluses aren’t generated immediately but instead happen over a long period of time and abuse.

Here is the Wikipedia definition of a callus and parents will resonate with this analogy that I put forth in the preceding paragraph:

“A callus is a toughened area of skin which has become relatively thick and hard in response to repeated friction, pressure, or other irritation.”

At a child’s birth, there is no way a parent can comprehend dropping your child off at daycare, leaving your kid at school for the day, letting them spend the night at a friend’s house or (gulp!) going on a date.  Each year of a child’s growth leaves calluses on a parent’s psyche that toughens you up for the next challenge.  Right now, I can’t imagine teaching my daughter to drive, watching her back out of the driveway on her way to spend the evening with her friends or driving away from a college campus after moving her into a dormitory.  But that is ok because I haven’t built up those calluses yet and in a few years I’ll be able to do these feats of bravery without curling up in the corner and crying.

Fortunately for humans, it takes about 18 years before we are ready to let our offspring leave the nest and parents are fortunate to have almost 2 decades of repeated friction, pressure and irritation to build up a thick layer of calluses that allow us to watch our children turn into adults.  Take heart fellow parents that our species has been doing this for about 200,000 years and we aren’t blazing new territory here.

Viva la Calluses!
